1. lots of interesting stuff going on in the folky world...
....folk music, particularly from England, was getting VERY political back in the 1980s. In the USA we did have the indigo girls, which where sort of folk.

The 80s where the decade Midnight Oil really took off, and the decade Billy Bragg had some of his best tunes...

2. I couldn't stand pop in the 80's
now I'm older I appreciate it, but my 80's love was rock/metal.

Nowdays I listen to a wide range, from 60's rock and pop, the metal I listened to in the 80's i still love, to modern music of all sorts.

Replacements, Pixies, REM, Dream Syndicate, Windbreakers, Jody Grind, Buffalo Tom, Big Dipper, Dumptruck, The Embarrassment, Dinosaur Jr., Wishniaks, Sneetches, etc., etc...

Human League, Tangerine Dream, Red Rockers, Madrillon, and all the other "English Art Music", plus Brian Eno, early Cranberries, and the thousand other New Wave groups whose names escape me now.
