So, my partner's uncle just died of lung cancer. |
|
I was just posting about him on Catpower's qutting-smoking thread a few hours ago...and I just got off the phone with my partner and her family. He died this afternoon, soon after they left the hospital after their visit with him. Liza said that he was nonresponsive most of the time they were there, but when his youngest grandchild climbed into the bed to kiss him he smiled. I'm glad he could tell she was there. He really loved all his grandchildren, but she was his favorite.
Liza's mother was telling me about him on the phone. She said that in the 1960s he was very involved in the civil rights movement and that this gave him a real "fellow feeling with the poor" that affected him for the rest of his life. She also said she used to tell him about my columns on DU and he got a real kick out of them. I always appreciated that about him, and the fact that he was just a friendly, big-hearted guy who really wanted me and Liza to feel welcome in the extended family. He had a big personality and a big laugh and he was always the life of the party. I'll miss him, but of course Liza and her family will miss him a lot more.
So, one more old-fashioned liberal has left us. My ideas on the hereafter are nebulous and vacillate, but I hope that he is safe and happy and that he knew that he was surrounded by people who loved him when he went. I'm glad he didn't have to suffer any longer than he did, but I'm still sort of stunned that it was this sudden.
Well, goodbye George, and rest in peace. We'll miss you.

I am sorry the world and your extended family has lost this sweet man and big-hearted liberal, and extremely grateful I won't be dying the same way. Thank you for giving me my reason for the day to stay quit.
My deepest sympathies and big hugs to you and your partner. Take care.

and I am so sorry for your loss. It is wonderful that he smiled when his granddaughter kissed him. I hope she remembers that all of her life.

It's tough to say goodbye to some of those great spirits in the older generation. My parents were part of the Old Left and I have been going to their friends' memorial services for many a year. So many irreplaceable personalities-- what a loss of love, energy, experience. . .
