|
This is truly stunning. Miami is just not in this game, period. Outscored 33-3 since the opening kickoff?
The only other games in recent memory that come to mind is the game in '98 when the Donovan McNabb Syracuse team hung 66 on the Canes, and I think Va Tech beat them pretty bad in '99 (Hokies Sugar Bowl team).

I seem to remember a Miami team that went to the MNC game with a loss in, what, 2001? Definately not the end of the world.
When two teams play and neither has a loss, one of their seasons ends. It's the nature of the beast. But then sometimes that ending isn't really the end. If there is only one undefeated team, or none at all, then someone with a loss might win it all. Never give up.
BTW, it's 33-18 now. Two scores.

Miami was unbeaten, Nebraska had one loss. Should have been Oregon in that slot. Didn't really matter, that Miami team wasn't gonna lose.
Actually, since the formula in 1998, we haven't had an underserving champion.

18. Twice 1999 and last year |
|
1999 was Florida State and Virginia Tech in the Vick-Warrick show in the Sugar Bowl.
1998 Tennessee was unbeaten, Florida State had one loss, along with Ohio St, Kansas St, UCLA, and Arizona. FSU did play 8 bowl teams that year, so they probably deserved it.
2000 Oklahoma unbeaten. This one is tricky. FSU at 10-1 got the bid. But they lost to Miami, who was 10-1. BUT, Miami lost to Washington, who was also 10-1. UW lost to a 9-2 Oregon team, and also beat 10-1 Oregon State. Good argument for the Huskies that year.
2001 I covered.
2002 Miami-Ohio State unbeaten.
I really do think the BCS gets too much flack. Under the old system, Miami and Ohio St. would never have played. I don't want a playoff, because it would cheapen the regular season. There is nothing like the week in, week out pressure to stay unbeaten. I think the only way the BCS gets into hot water is if three teams finish without a loss, and that hasn't happened among major conference teams since like '65 or '66.

"I think the only way the BCS gets into hot water is if three teams finish without a loss, and that hasn't happened among major conference teams since like '65 or '66."
True enough, but what if a BYU or Tulane pull it off? Don't they even get a chance? I'm not a defender of the "mid-major" schools, to borrow a basketball term, but those schools are left out. And the times when there is only one undefeated team and a bunch of one-lossers, it seems unfair to all the one-lossers but one. Last year it worked, and in 1999.
I really understand what you're saying, and I don't think a playoff is a perfect solution. But I think using the BCS formula to invite the top eight would be an improvement. I don't think it would lesson the importance of the regular season at all. Most years, two losses would do a lot of teams in. It's not like the teams would quit trying. And it's better to snub #9 than #3.
The university presidents like the BCS, so I don't think there will ever be a playoff.

25. I'd be in favor of a fifth BCS bowl for the best mid major |
|
There's talk of adding in the Cotton Bowl, and then giving a spot to the best mid major team. I think this would be fair to get some of the money into the other conferences.
But I just don't think a mid major can compete for a national title, not with their schedules. Case in point last year. The best mid major team was Boise State, 11-1 in the regular season. They played one game against a BCS conference team, that was at Arkansas, and they got clocked 44-14. If Boise played in a major conference, they're a 7-5 and 8-4 team.
I went to a MAC school, I love the smaller D-1 teams, and I'd like to see one a year on New Year's Day, but I wouldn't have wanted to see that '98 Tulane team or the '99 Marshall team play for a title.

30. I tend to agree about Tulane and Marshall. |
|
But why not give them a shot in a playoff? If they're not good enough, then they'll get knocked out early. End of story. And no "it wasn't fair" talk.
Even a 4-game playoff would be really really cool.
That said, the BCS is better than what we had before. No doubt about that. And it's here to stay, I think, so any conversation about it is purely academic.

32. Say you went four teams last year... |
|
Miami, Ohio State, who and who? Georgia and either USC or Oklahoma I presume. In that scenario, you have to pick between two 2-loss teams and two teams who went unbeaten have the same chance as two teams with three losses between them. Not fair to Miami or OSU, who did their jobs during the year.
You're right about it all being academic, despite these congressional hearings (BTW, where was the Tulane prez when they were unbeaten in '98?). The powers that be don't want it, plus it's a GREAT conversation piece! ;)
Time to get today's results into the spreadsheet so I can research who I want to bet on next week!

I've never heard it put exactly that way before. It's hard to disagree with that. And it (the BCS) worked out last year. But in '98, I think my Buckeyes were screwed. I know that I'm biased. I recognize that. Even in a playoff, someone is screwed. The last team out is upset that they're not in. It's unavoidable.
I think it's better, though, to "screw" number five or nine than it is to "screw" number three.
Last year, the system worked out in my favorite team's favor, because there were exactly two teams that "did their jobs during the year." But if there were a playoff, I don't think it would've been unfair to OSU or Miami. (Remember, I'm even biased.) But shouldn't the team that wins a playoff be the champ? If OSU or Miami got beaten in the first round, then maybe they shouldn't be the champ. I think that's quite fair to OSU and Miami. Win or go home. OSU (my team) might have been upset in a first round game in a 4- or 8-game playoff. That might indicate that another team was better. After all, what is the regular season, but a pre-Bowl playoff? Lose, and you have to get lucky to get a shot at the MNC. You didn't do your "job during the regular season."
Alright. Enough hijacking this thread. You have spreadsheets. I think I'll start a thread about this later in the season.

41. To me, the regular season IS the playoff. |
|
I guess my philosophy is just to win. Win all your games, and you will play for the title (BCS conferences only). Once you lose, you leave yourself to the mercy of the polls and computers. Just win.
The 1998 argument is funny. I'm a UCLA guy, and I wanted the Bruins in that game so bad, but I don't know if they got screwed or not. Out of the four one loss teams, Florida State had played the best schedule, 8 bowl teams in 12 games. UCLA beat Arizona, so U of A didn't really have a case. Kansas St. screwed themselves by playing no one out of conference. Ohio St. had the least excusable loss (blowing a 24-9 lead at home to a 28-pt dog who didn't go to a bowl game).
I always wonder what if about that UCLA team. The Miami loss was in early December, a make up game from September postponed due to a hurricane (Irony, huh?) Miami was not nearly as good earlier in the year. Well, c'est la vie.
I love these debates, there's so many ways to look at it!
Now, time to figure out how Idaho lost to Eastern Washington tonight by a score of 8-5.

That Eastern Washington team's only loss is to a very tough San Diego State team, unless I'm mistaken. That explains the Ohio State close call today. (Kidding.)
I once won $50 on a sheet with the unlikely score of Air Force - 5, Ohio State - 3 (maybe it was 2 - I honestly don't remember exactly) at halftime. What a shitty Liberty Bowl that was.

In a hypothetical four-team playoff, Georgia would have been #3, as they were the only major school with just one loss. The #4 team, whoever it would have been, would have had two losses.

Unbelievable game. Just great theater.
This Florida team is going to be very, very good when they mature, if their spaceman coach doesn't screw them up. Lots of just raw, green, talent waiting to explode.

Have you ever been to Huntington? There ain't much to do there and everyone knows who you are so you can't get away with much. Apparently Stan Hill talks to Leftwitch and Pennington every week, I think they are trying to get a "family" thing like Miami had going but with out the problems.
My whole family ((save for about 5 of us ) went to Marshall.
People in Southern WV have three dates that they know where they were when they heard -Sept.11 -JFK's assassination -The Marshall plane wreck.
One of my uncles was roomates with two of the guys on that flight and I believe my other younger uncle was on a date with the QB's sister. It too the school, community, and team 20 years to get over it. My uncle is a big booster and helped put the stadium deal together, when they finally won a 1-AA national title he went down on the field after everyone had left and cried.
GO HERD!
