Poll question: "The Band": Favorite song. |
|
You know, these guys! http://theband.hiof.no/albums/band_greatest_hits_2000.htmlI normally wouldn't post a "Best Of" music poll but that "Oh my gay stars!" guy got me going!;-)

thats my favorite The Band. The perfect reprise of any band. Wish they had stopped there. The weight, if I have to follow the rules and pick a song.

9. Honestly? They're almost ALL worthy of mention! |
|
I got tired of searching the web for the best of the best.
I also had a copy of the Last Waltz that I played until it broke (tape).
Fav song for me? That night they "drove ol' dixie down" I guess. Too difficult! "Ophelia"! "Up on Cripple Creek"!
Argh...:freak:

|
God, do I love their music.
Many of their best songs were not hits. A lot of them were quiet. I think my favorite is probably "Hobo Jungle" from "Northern Lights, Southern Cross."
Others that really resonate with me are "Whispering Pines," "The Rumor," "Islands," "The Legend of Pepote Rouge," "Rocking Chair," "Too Soon Gone" (from Jericho), and "Acadian Driftwood." How many bands write songs about the French and American Indian War?

|
...also Chest Fever and Rag Mama Rag and about a dozen others. "Ain't No More Cane" from the Basement Tapes ... "Baby Don't you Do It" that opens the Last Waltz film ... the version of The Weight in the film, with the Staples...
My wife can't get enough of Long Black Veil from 'Big Pink'. She plays all of Robbie's solo stuff a lot, too. I think she has a crush on the guy...

But "When I Paint My Masterpiece" is my favorite song.

Good tune, evocative lyrics, but what kind of place is "Nazareth" anyway?
One of the more cryptic tunes in the folk/country/rock genre that the Band worked in...

Just about any gem from The Basement Tapes like "Katie's Been Gone", "Bessie Smith", or "Yazoo Street Scandal" - or from the first two albums - "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "Chest Fever", "The Weight", "I Shall Be Released", "Jemima Surrender", or "Across The Great Divide". So many, many more...

Get up Jake. I Shall be Released and The Night They Drove ole Dixie Down, also, both very good. The Band had one of the most unique sounds of any group I can remember. Loved their music. The music of The Band and Van Morrison seem timeless....even my teenage kids like their music.
