What kind if town/city is it? Are the leaves changing at or around Columbus day weekend out there? I understand it's about 85 miles SW of Denver. Are there nice places to go and see? I'll be attending a conference there and if I have time, I'd like to see the best natural sites.
Any sugestions?

1. Never been there, but I heard it's cool |

I'll bet there's some good hiking or sight-seeing around there. And the Aspen trees are due to start changing colors soon. http://www.townoffrisco.com/We're headed that direction ourselves, in mid-September. It's more of a Black Canyon-Mesa Verde-hiking trip, though. :)

2. frisco is about 9000 feet, |

at the foot of the continental divide. mountains reach above the timberline all around the town, which also hosts the primary marina for dillon reservoir. it's about ten miles or so from the world famous ski resort of breckenridge, and about forty five minutes away from vail.
i have no idea when columbus day even is, but check with denver media (like 9news.com) for aspen change forecasts. it's spectacular.

Great little town - A friend of mine used to have a cabin there when I was a kid. We stayed over there twice and we had a blast. It was great in the summer, and superb in the winter where we could ski at nearby Breckenridge.
You'll have a good time -- just stay away from those Repukes.

In Summit County.
Sits on the western shore of Lake Dillon. Very beautiful.
October, though, is "mud season," a very slow month between the Summer season and the ski season. Many restaurants and businesses will be closed in the area. The weather could be spectacular or awful or anywhere in between and could change dramatically with little or no warning that time of year. You will likely have just missed seeing the aspens turn, which is what passes for Fall in Colorado. Nothing like Fall in New England.
Nearby communities include:
Breckenridge, a beautiful Victorian mining town turned resort. Lots of great restaurants, cultural activities and hiking-skiing-biking, etc. I love Breckenridge. Also the home of the original Breckenridge brewery/brewpub.
Silverthorne/Dillon, the original old town of Dillon was flooded by the creation of the reservoir (Lake Dillon). Silverthorne is the commercial center on the Interstate.
Keystone, a fun resort (but again, October is the slow season).
Copper Mountain, another resort.
Leadville is not far, a town at 10,000 feet with an amazing Wild West and mining heritage.
Frisco is also just over Vail Pass from Vail (about 15 minutes away or so), which is the biggest town around. WAY too Republican for my taste though,
You're also ony an hour from Denver (assuming the weather is reasonable).
