What is your favorite Schadenfreude experience?
Tell the story of the time you derived pleasure from someone else's misfortune most.

1. The demise of the people who fired me
The two nightmares who so thoroughtly enjoyed firing from a picture were both fired the day it wrapped a few weeks later, and one of them was brought up on charges of embezzlement in two states. Six weeks later, the company called me to hire me to do another show, but I was busy....

La la la...it doesn't get much better than that...

They're both out of the business now, while I live on to wreak yet more havoc...

2. Stock Market Dives; I love watching the rich get poorer..
Since we can't tax the rich, shoot the rich or eat the rich this is as close as I can get to seeing the oligarchy get screwed.

I also love it when a hurricane hits a red state. Whooohoooo!!!

14. Poor choice, IMHO........
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 12:39 AM by Pert_UK
I also like to see smug people taken down a peg or two, but you've got to remember that a lot of "poor" people's pension funds are indirectly invested in the stock market.

Pensions companies all invest their clients' cash in stocks, and when stocks fall then the little guy loses his pension too.......

Also, my dad was advised to put his tiny amount of savings into a stock-market linked account.....and when it tanked it halved in value. He wasn't being greedy, he was badly advised that this account would be safe but give a little more interest.

3. 2002 Elections
When the conservative Stoiber held his victory speech (9PM or so). I was very troubled at first - what does he know, what I don't? . His speech being funny was nothing that cheered me up (he said "let's open a glass of champagne").

Well, his victory-declaration was premature. In the 11PM news the anchorman stopped in mid-sentence and said: "It seems that the Social Democrats won not only the majority of seats, but the popular vote as well."

6. Then there was the time
I was cruising into work and found myself being tailgated by some moronic redneck in a Dodge Ram. (Seems to be a lot of those around, or is it just me?) I tapped my brakes a couple times to express my displeasure, at which point he stomped on it and passed me (in a NO PASSING zone!) at about 85. (I was doing 60 in a 55) He flipped me off as he cut back over, and was soon out of sight. Within 2 minutes I passed him sitting on the shoulder with a State Trooper walking up to him with the ticket book out. I smiled all the rest of the way in.

7. Mine's pretty cool
I worked at a radio station, mismanaged to the point of fraud.

The station was sold to another company, and my boss tried to screw me over by trashing me to the new owners.

Well, the new owners liked me and kept me on. On my 2nd day, the new GM called me into his office and told me what this guy had said about me. So I gave up a couple dozen names of record company reps who had paid him (at his demand) to get records spun. Promotional gifts kept by him and not given out to listeners, etc.

All the reps found out that he had kept the items they gave to the company for contests and blacklisted him. Last I heard, he was facing something like 20 counts of fraud.

I never did follow up on that. It was enough to hear thathe was forced to get a lawyer. And if he'd just kept his mouth shut, I'd have never turned on him.

9. On a plane
It was a friday night commuter flight and packed, and there
was this chick sitting in the row in front of me who talked
non-stop and LOUDly through the entire flight to the stranger
fella next to her about the most intimate details of her social
life and sexual history. It was loud enough and obnoxious
enough for at least two rows in either direction of this woman
to hear her. You could see the fellow passengers snickering
to themselves as she went on and on.
Anyway, after we landed and got to the terminal gate, the
airline pulled one of its "we're gonna make you sit here"
routines, and Ms. Gabby decided she had to go to the bathroom,
but of course everyone has already stood up, waiting to get
off, and they were in the aisle. Well, as she made her way
through the crowd to the bathroom, no one said anything, but
as soon as she shut the door... well, let's just say everyone
was expressing their condolences to her seatmate. Then, on
the way back, some woman, feeling even bitchier than me, refused
to let her go by, and she had to stand with the rest of us,
waiting to get back to her seat. She shut up then.

11. My tenth high school reunion
I was working on a Ph.D. at Yale and had just returned from a year in Japan.

One of the girls who had consistently been mean to me all through junior and senior high school was twice-divorced, had four children under six, and was living in an old trailer behind a store.

The other time was when I learned that one of my most sullen, uncooperative, spoiled brat students hadn't come back to school after summer vacation because he had joined the Marines. I relished the thought of him having his head bitten off the first time he talked back to his D.I. the way he talked back to me.

12. Downfall of Bob Livingston
closely followed by that of Newt Gingrich. But Newt never got outed for his sexual hypocrisy, and that element was what made the Livingston story so delicious in light of his role in the effort to end someone else's political career over much smaller sexual improprieties.

Conason says that Gingrich's affair was common knowledge in DC during the Impeachment fiasco, so I wonder why Flynt didn't expose it.

13. Freshman year HS
Everyone said if I didn't want to be a total freak I should go out for a sport, so I joined the track team. I hated it and was falling behind in homework so I quit. The coach (who was also a teacher) took it out on me and my grades in his class went down (All his track students got preferential treatment, though).

A few weeks later, a massive storm hit and blew the bleachers down (since the contractor never atually bolted them down) and ruined their brand new track.

15. A Fundy gossip in my hometown's daughter got preg. at baptist youth camp
Oh how I relished it. This was a woman who talked about everyone else in town...she was a nosy busybody who always criticized other people's children, and stuck her nose into others' business, just so she could have something to talk about with her other fundy friends.

She looked down on me because I left my abusive husband while I was pregnant, and even had the audacity to tell me that I was lucky that our small hometown welcomed me (who became pregant while MARRIED) back with open arms.

Well, instead of telling her off, I simmered and thought, "She will get hers one day." Might I add that this bitch, who never even pretended to be a friend to me, came to the hospital to "inspect" my son the day he was born.

So, karma and all that, within two years, her daughter--the apple of her eye golden child good christian who could do no wrong--got knocked up at Baptist Youth Camp by a camp counselor. Oh did this bring her down! And OH HOW I DID ENJOY IT!!
