New Librarian Action Figure |
|
This new doll brings its finger to its mouth and shushes people. Are librarians right to get upset about this stereotype? But more importantly, who would you like to give this action figure to (or use it on)?

3. The Librarian Action Figure would be better depicted as |
|
fighting the Patriot Act.

9. Actually, the figure is based on a real librarian who is well known |

as a Patriot Act fighter. In appearance, she is very much the stereotype but not in actions.
The only person she would probably shush is Asscroft. And Bush, and Rove, and . . .
Edit: Planning to give to many of my librarian friends! I'm a big, big Archi McPhee fan anyway.

6. Librarians can be dangerous |
|
Why I heard there was this librarian from Midland, Texas who ran over her ex-boyfriend and killed him when she was 17. I wonder what ever happened to her.

8. Most librarians I know would laugh |
|
At the stereotype.
I'm prejudiced; my mother was a librarian. If you ever want to find a bunch of liberal free-thinkers, check out your local public library. They read books! They know where to look up stuff! They have met your local would-be book-burners, and despise them!
Mom was a "freedom of information" activist back in the fifties when it was really, really dangerous to confront the censors. If she was alive today, I can imagine her wagging her finger in front of John Ashcroft and rebuking him with "Young man, you should be *ashamed* of yourself!" BTW, she really DID do this to Reagan back in the sixties, when he was Governor of California and proposed purging public libraries of "subversive literature".
