4. Zen fish parable (non-atheist, maybe)
What is God?

Well, there's these goldfish in a river, see, and they've heard the humans walking past or fishing talking about this thing called 'water.' And they wonder what it is 'water'? It sounds so miraculous and interesting. And one of the fish, more adventurous than the rest, says "I will make a journey to the farthest ends of the earth, if necessary, and I will come back with the answer to the question 'what is water?'" And off he goes.

Many years pass, and the fish in the river get old and have families and forget about their friend who went to discover the meaning of 'water.' But finally, one day he returns, to the astonishment of all. Old and grey, he has had many adventures and tells the others about the many things, strange, wonderful and terrifying, that he has experienced. But finally one of the fish asks him, "So, did you ever find out what that 'water' thing was?"

"Well," he says rather reluctantly, "as a matter of fact, yes."

"Well, what is it!" they demand to know.

"You'd never believe me."

5. If you deleted "What is God?" you would have a very good Buddhist
story on the nature of things: "suchness." That title makes it a Christian tract on theism. I am going to send it (sans title) to some friends.

7. Well, like I said
"non-atheist, maybe." It's not exactly dogmatic Christian, even in this version--more like pantheist. Or non-theist. "What is god?" is a question, not an assertion--it doesn't necessarily presuppose a Christian or even theistic answer. It's a very nicely open-ended parable, I think. But it certainly works without the title.

9. "What is God?" is an assertion
Questions are frequently used as covert ways of making assertions. I liked it and since I emailed it to Buddhists so I changed the text to reflect that reality.
