2. Dubbing is an art

Those who do not enter into it without proper respect should be drawn and quartered. If you are not prepared to respect the art then stick to subtitles. I am getting very tired of buying discs with English only lousy dubbing. If you are going to dub it and not present the original language label the dang thing that way.

3. A pox on their houses! I hate loath and dispise

watching foreign films that have been dubbed. Does it bother American audiences so much to read subtitles or is the media admitting that people can't read and watch the action at the same time.

9. As someone with a fifty percent hearing loss in both

ears and who uses a closed-captioned TV, I can state with total confidence that it is, indeed, possible to watch the action and read subtitles at the same time!

Of course, during live news broadcasts, it can sometimes get really funny because the captioning often gets behind what's being shown so that the picture you're seeing doesn't at all match what you're reading. And the captioning of the sounds during sex scenes are often just WAY too funny!

However I am very pleased by the trend in German television to offer the original as well as the dubbed version.

DVDs were a huge step forward - it was very hard to get original videos before that (NTSC/PAL speed problem).

11. Actually,

the dubbed version of Crouching Tiger is fairly good. The lines synch up without resorting to clunky dialogue, and the Chinese accents are, for the most part, believable.

I'm only watching brief snatches of the movie, so I'm not sure if it's been edited or not.

12. I don't mind subtitles

I do read fairly often so reading is second nature to me. Sometimes, I don't even realize that I am reading it. I especially enjoy watching movies in languages that I have some understanding of with subtitles to help me. I temporarily become more fluent in that language.
