Freepers at the Folk Festival

When I think of folk music, I think of liberal activists spreading their message with music. OK, there are plenty of songs about love and death and non-activist related subjects; but the last type of person I associate the genre with is republican.

Yet at today's festival in Takoma Park, there was apparently a "Bush in 2004" booth handing out latex balloons. I SO wanted to pop them! I was surprised at myself. It really bothered me that I couldn't find a momentary haven from that jackass even in a folk festival. :grr:

Also some gospel, is done at Folk Festivals.

I seen one guy openly boo (verbally and showmanship thumbs-down) Tom Paxton when he did a song unfavorable to Bush at a Folk Fest here.

He got zero support from the crowd and he har-umphed his fool self out soon after.

The lacking in normal social skills + political leanings + quickness to throw a snit fit matches the Freep profile.

He was mingling and talking with people when he wasn't performing.

He is a freakin' legend but he was so casual and easy going it was incredible.

...the fan base is WAY different than on the West Coast.

Its actually kind of scary to go to bluegrass festivals...mix of scary redneckism and seriously repressied fundy gospel subculture.
