It's 5:30 A.M. ....

On a nice July morning, you're sitting on a hill overlooking the river lake, ocean etc... you have a couple smokes left, a coffee that you bought at seven 11 on the way up to this spot, your best friend, and the sun is just starting to come up. Clearly the night is over and you had fun, maybe something happened that changed you a bit.

So, it's you, your coffe, your smokes, and your friend. Leaning against the hood of the car takin' it in, having the kind of chat only good friends can. Taste the smoke taste the coffee, feel the light breeze, a bit chilly, but it is July so it's bearable. There? Good. What song do you want to hear on the radio?

Sometimes it all comes together - you know?

I'd say - Tuesday's gone, or Oh sweet Nuthin. Maybe Green Onions.

1. It all came together for me when I was at an Italian restaurant in Toronto
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 12:29 AM by northwest
In Little Italy on a Saturday night with my family. I just finished my stressful job as a convenience store assistant manager, I was relaxing on vacation, on an outdoor patio at an independent upscale restaurant, sipping my wine, chatting with my family, the mild evening breeze whisping my hair, waiting for my fettucine, and I thought: "I don't want this moment to end."

But it did. And now I'm in a stuffy 18x8 dorm room in Fargo, North Dakota, typing away to 2,000 posts and simultaneously trying to get my studying done.

Ahhh, that night.....

Sorry for digressing. But I would listen to "Karma Police" by Radiohead.

3. For me, it was a night...
...where I'd been out shooting pictures all night long. It was foggy with a perfect pink sunrise coming up nicely. I'd smoked a little bud and drank a lot of coffee. I was with my lady friend of the moment, just soaking it all in, and even though I was only about 20, I knew that this was something very special.

I don't remember what I was *really* listening to that night, but thinking about it, the perfect soundtrack would probably be Linda Ronstadt's "Hasten Down the Wind."

4. You're 17, and in three days you'll be in boot camp, CFB Petawawa...
You've graduated high school early by attending summer school for two years. One of your closest friends has just hanged herself at age 18, and you've had to face your own mortality for the first time. You are in a hot-tub with three of your best friends, finishing off the dregs of a $10,000 wine collection you've broken into and chugged like Thunderbird. It's four hours after the house party is techically over, but you all know this is the end. The sky is becomming brighter. The water is black with spilled wine and god knows what else, because you've all been in it for over three hours. You pass the bottles around, and occasionally they slip beneath the water, mixing with the brine. With your friends. You don't care. You are the brightest, most original minds in your school, despite your grades. You're smarter than your teachers, and their awareness of that has made your last three years somewhat challenging, but worth every minute. And you regret nothing.

You're listening exclusively to mixed tapes of punk, new wave, industrial, and avant garge music, because it's 1984, and you don't "do" rock 'n' roll.

John Cage. Psychic TV. Laurie Anderson. Black Flag. Psychedelic Furs. William Burroughs. Jim Thirlwell. Police. Dayglo Abortions. Animal Things. Flying Lizards. Dead Kennedys. The Clash. Bauhaus.

But then, Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here", and you're all 13 again, playing D&D and talking about how you can't imagine ever being anywhere than where you are at that moment.

And you'll never be there again. And you'll never be here again. And it's very, very good.

5. We were at Gay Bingo in Seattle
Everyone had had a couple of drinks, it was a beautiful day that had segued into a gorgeous starry night. I was surrounded by friends and sitting with DH. We were talking, laughing, and having a tremendous time.

Typically, music at Gay Bingo is pretty upbeat; this night, though, the DJ must have made an exception. Even with 600 people in a gigantic auditorium, when Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" started playing, everything stopped.

If I had to pick another song I'd want to hear when life was perfection for even three minutes, I'd pick the following:

"Here Comes The Sun", the Beatles
"Another Star," Stevie Wonder (a bit longer at 8:09)
or
"Let's Stay Together," Al Green

of a Point Loma mansion with a 16 year-old surfer girl sleeping in your lap as the sun rises over the San Diego skyline with the smell of citrus blossoms and salt air filtering through your nostrils.....
