Poll question: Favorite Warren Zevon Song? |
|
I am leaving out "Werewolves of London" - fun song, I enjoy it, but done to death by 'classic rawk' radio, and well, it has long overshadowed songs MUCH more deserving in stature in his canon.

|
Well, I went home with the waitress The way I always do How was I to know She was with the Russians, too
I was gambling in Havana I took a little risk Send lawyers, guns and money Dad, get me out of this
I'm the innocent bystander Somehow I got stuck Between the rock and the hard place And I'm down on my luck And I'm down on my luck And I'm down on my luck
Now I'm hiding in Honduras I'm a desperate man Send lawyers, guns and money The shit has hit the fan
Send lawyers, guns and money...
RIP, Warren

It seems very appropriate now. If you sub Afganistan or Iraq for Havana, it could be *'s theme song.

3. Warren was twisted (in a good way). |
|
"Excitable Boy"
Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best Excitable boy, they all said And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest Excitable boy, they all said Well, he's just an excitable boy
He took in the four a.m. show at the Clark Excitable boy, they all said And he bit the usherette's leg in the dark Excitable boy, they all said Well, he's just an excitable boy
He took little Susie to the Junior Prom Excitable boy, they all said and he raped her and killed her, then he took her home Excitable boy, they all said Well, he's just an excitable boy After ten long years they let him out of the Home Excitable boy, they all said And he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones Excitable boy, they all said Well, he's just an excitable boy
Eeeeeeeeeeeeew! (Mine.)

13. All those Asylum Records artists: Zevon, Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Eagles |
|
Jennifer Warnes, Joe Walsh
It must have been quite a party in LA twenty five years ago. All of those great musicians and vocalists are found in the credits of each others' albums. They even used the same producer, I recall (was it Don Kirshner?). It brings back memories of spinning vinyl and reading the liner notes when I was young.

Between "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and "Raspberry Beret". I know the latter isn't technically a Zevon song, but I've always thought it was a great version. I used to do it at an open mike night, and people always loved it.

but I'll sleep when I'm dead, Roland, Mohammeds Radio, Aint That Pretty At All, where to start picking a best of... I saw Warren back to back nights in 1981 or '2. Two of the best shows I have ever seen. He got really pissed off at the folks at Hancher adutitorium in Iowa City 'cuz they wouldn't let him crawl about on the Grand piano.
I hear Mariachi static on my radio And the tubes they glow in the dark And I'm there with her in Ensenada And I'm here in Echo Park
Carmelita hold me tighter I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town
Well, I'm sittin' here playing solitaire With my pearl-handled deck The county won't give me no more methadone And they cut off your welfare check
Carmelita hold me tighter I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town
Well, I pawned my Smith Corona And I went to meet my man He hangs out down on Alvarado Street By the Pioneer chicken stand
Carmelita hold me tighter I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town Carmelita hold me tighter I think I'm sinking down And I'm all strung out on heroin On the outskirts of town

Everybody's restless and they've got no place to go Someone's always trying to tell them Something they already know So their anger and resentment flow
But don't it make you want to rock and roll All night long Mohammed's Radio I heard somebody singing sweet and soulful On the radio, Mohammed's Radio
You know, the Sheriff's got his problems too He will surely take them out on you In walked the village idiot and his face was all aglow He's been up all night listening to Mohammed's Radio
Don't it make you want to rock and roll All night long Mohammed's Radio I heard somebody singing sweet and soulful On the radio, Mohammed's Radio
Everybody's desperate trying to make ends meet Work all day, still can't pay the price of gasoline and meat Alas, their lives are incomplete
Don't it make you want to rock and roll All night long Mohammed's Radio I heard somebody singing sweet and soulful On the radio, Mohammed's Radio
You've been up all night listening for his drum Hoping that the righteous might just might just might just come I heard the General whisper to his aide-de-camp Be watchful for Mohammed's lamp
Don't it make you want to rock and roll All night long Mohammed's Radio

32. Totally obscure, but.... "The Sin" |
|
The Sin By Warren Zevon c. Zevon Music BMI, 1980
It's none of my business But if I may Remind you of the time When you did something you knew was wrong It wasn't called a crime And I'm not saying that you should give A sucker an even break I'm talking about the time That you were cruel for cruelty's sake I'm talking about the time That you were cruel for cruelty's sake
How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for the sin? How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for the sin? Hah?
Maybe you went and stuck your key In somebody else's door Maybe you went and helped yourself To something that wasn't yours Maybe you simply criticized Someone you hardly knew You ruined part of their life for them Part of your own life, too
How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for the sin? How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for it then?
If and when you feel an ill wind Don't be too surprised Remember when you should have Picked on somebody your own size
How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for the sin? How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for How you gonna pay for the sin? How am I gonna pay for How am I gonna pay for How am I gonna pay for the sin?

I gotta say, I'll miss Zevon. He was amazing. I spent a lot of time with his music--it really is a part of my life's soundtrack--just as I suspect it is for many of us.
The Envoy
Nuclear arms in the Middle East Israel is attacking the Iraqis The Syrians are mad at the Lebanese And Baghdad does whatever she please Looks like another threat to world peace For the envoy
Things got hot in El Salvador CIA got caught and couldn't do no more He's got diplomatic immunity He's got a lethal weapon that nobody sees Looks like another threat to world peace For the envoy Send the envoy Send the envoy
Whenever there's a crisis The President sends his envoy in Guns in Damascus Oh, Jerusalem
Nuclear arms in the Middle East Israel is attacking the Iraqis The Syrians are mad at the Lebanese And Baghdad do whatever she please Looks like another threat to world peace For the envoy Send the envoy . . . Send for me
We'll miss you. Warren Zevon (1947-2003)

because his cover of Dylan's Knocking on Heaven's Door is one of the most beautiful and (given the circumstances) moving recordings I've ever heard. Dylan songs often are best as covers.
If we're talking Warren's own songs, then it's a tie between Excitable Boy and L,G&M for me.
