Question for DU'ers who are Jewish re Yom Kippur |
|
How does a non-Jew express recognition of the holiday to Jewish friends, in a greeting or salute. Is that appropriate?
Thanks!

1. Yom Tov or have an easy fast are appropriate for holiday |
|
For this holiday, the traditional greeting is Yom Tov (happy new year) but another appropriate greeting is "have an easy fast."

2. Thank you so much. I am sending out a notice about another |
|
matter, but wanted to express some sentiment for the holiday. I had thought about Happy New Year, but thought that was more appropriate for Rosh Hashonna (sp?). Thanks for enlightening me.

4. Would it be appropriate to say something like: |
|
Wishing everyone a peaceful Yom Kippur. Yom Tov.

Chag Samayach means "Happy Holiday." The "Ch" is pronounced with a bit of phlegm, as in the Scottish word "Loch."
Goot Yontiff means "Good Holiday."
L'Shanah Tovah is "Happy New Year" and is acceptable from Rosh Hashannah through Yom Kippur.
Have fun with your Jewing.

5. There is a theory (albeit a mad theory) that the Scots are a lost tribe |
|
of Israel. If you think about it, there's a lot of similarities between Scots and Jews.

7. Yes. If it's not Jewish, it's crap. |

6. Thanks for your suggestions. |
|
I'm not quite sure what to make of "Have fun with your Jewing." Should I not even do this (is that what you're trying to tell me?) . Please share.

9. "Happy Yom Kippur" isn't the right way to go, although it's a forgivable |
|
thing (the intent is good, after all).
Some of the other posters have had some good suggestions. Good yontiff is usually my greeting of choice (when I said that to my mom, she replied, "Oh, you've decided to be Jewish all of the sudden?" -- I grew up Jewish but don't really practice anymore.)

None of my Jewish friends are answering their phones - so I turned to DU - NOT THINKING FOR A MOMENT that someone might do something like that!
Thank goodness, underpants and matcom haven't seen this thread yet!
edit for spelling

14. Dammit, Allen, shush! |
|
I almost had him with the classic "L'Shanah Tovah" gambit!
(Note for the uninformed: L'Shanah Tovah was a little known mid-season replacement forward for the New Orleans Jazz, whose name, coincidentally, is Yiddish for "a stiff dick has no concience.")

15. A less formal holiday greeting... |
|
But more personal, is "Kisch mein tochus, schlemiel!"
