it would be a stretch to say any of my favorite books are about politics. Regarding movies, Apocalypse Now when I'm bitter, Big Lebowski when optimistic.

8. Reading Catch-22 right now - my all-time favorite book... |

Political book: All the President's Men; with Boss: Mayor Richard J. Daley of Chicago a close second.
In movies, I too lean toward the Coen Brothers. For me, O Brother Where Art Thou? for my optimistic days. :-) For feeding pessimism and paranoia, there's nothing like The Parallax View. :scared:

2. No I never wonder about the first lady being a crusader for literacy |
|
she is a crusader for whatever she is told to be a crusader for and has no mind of her own and she appears to like it that way. After all, if left to herself, how could she support herself, much less get all that she has been given when she married this jerk, George? She likes being there where she is--getting it all-the "respect" the accolades, the publicity-without being too talented or smart or committed to anything that would "embarrass" the BFEE. She actually likes that role, I believe and I also believe she possesses the barest minimum in intelligence--being as bereft of it as her hubby, George. What a couple! Certainly, she is as exciting and as interesting as a dead codfish that has been left on the dock in the sun for three days.

3. Maybe it's the cobbler's children syndrome |

Or maybe Laura is a teacher like Peggy Hill is a teacher.

On DU tonight I learned that Laura is going to spend money we do not have to brighten up Pa. Ave. Only the twins seem to have any spunk. Laura is a dud and Georgie, aka Stump, is so far down the food chain that the locust avoid him. My favorite book is Pride and Prejudice and all other Jane Austen books. The lady was a genius...so clever. I read them over and over just to absorb the irony and incredibly clever innuendos. I like the books that Al Gore has written, especially Earth in the Balance. My favorite movie is Gone With The Wind. Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh are so so...perfect. What a great film to have been made in 1939.
