"I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls. "It's all about me" is the theme of the song and it sums up how the pukes are controlling things.

That is the perfect anthem for the current misadministration...

11. Situational: "Political Science," by Randy Newman. Traditional:
"America, The Beautiful." Way better as a song than the curent national anthme, and more likely to fit the vocal range than the "Star Spangled Banner." There're only about three people on Earth who can hit all the notes in today's anthem, and the lyrics are a mess and hard to remember - counterintuitive, at least to me and to Frank Drebin.

Or "American Trilogy," with the only official version being one of Elvis' live renditions. :D

particular and deliberate protest against the Jingoist National Anthem, "God Bless America". Look up the full lyrics sometime. I like the part about the two sides of the sign......

38. An additional bit of Woody Guthrie trivia...
The original title of the song was an even more blatant slam at the Freeper anthem. It was titled "God Blessed America For Me"

Here's how the lyrics originally read.....

This Land Was Made For You And Me

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island,
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters,
God blessed America for me.

As I went walking that ribbon of highway
And saw above me that endless skyway,
And saw below me the golden valley, I said:
God blessed America for me.

I roamed and rambled and followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts,
And all around me , a voice was sounding:
God blessed America for me.

Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property,
But on the back side it didn't say nothing --
God blessed America for me.

When the sun come shining, then I was strolling
In wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling;
The voice was chanting as the fog was lifting:
God blessed America for me.

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple
By the Relief Office I saw my people --
As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if
God blessed America for me.

Works just as well either way, in my opinion. But maybe Woody wanted to make the right wingers think a little more, so he changed the obvious title to one slightly more subtle.....

59. Slightly different version about the sign,,,,,
goes like so..

Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property,
But on the back side it didn't say nothing --
That side was made for you and me.

Guthrie did a lot of rewrites.

"America the Beautiful" is a great song that glorifies the country, instead of our present anthem, which is the only national anthem about war.

39. I don't know about that
Ours may be the only one talking about rockets and bombs, but doesn't the French anthem speak of 'making the streets of Paris run red with the blood of the enemies of France'?
Sounds pretty violent.

I like Australia's though, it's about a man hung for stealing sheep...

52. you might want to change your mind
There seems to be an awful lot of God in that Hymn

Oh beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Oh beautiful for pilgrim feet
Who's stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

Oh beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self the country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

Oh beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

The official version would be the first two verses (including the line with "thine alabaster cities gleam..."). We would sing the first two verses for Olympic medal ceremonies and before sporting events.

63. I love "America the Beautiful"
I hate "The Star-Spangled Banner", not just for it's war imagery, but because it is so damn hard to sing if you have a limited vocal range. "America the Beautiful" does have one God reference (but so does "O, Canada"), but it otherwise invokes an image of our nation's varying landscapes, and it's physical beauty.
