Saw an outrageous Laura Bush bumper sticker today
in the Whole Foods parking lot in Madison

It had a head shot of Pickles on it and it said

Beware (or something like that, I forget what the first line said)
First lady driving
"I've killed before"

1. I Want One!
Anyone got the details on her homicide that has been brushed aside? Seriously, I've heard she killed someone, but not the details.

5. All broken up
On Nov. 6, 1963, then-17 year-old Laura Welch was driving with a friend on a Midland, Texas highway. In a cruel twist of fate, her high school boyfriend Michael Douglas, a popular football star, had just entered one of the town's most dangerous intersections driving another vehichle, when Laura's car slammed into it.

Douglas suffered a broken neck and was DOA at Midland Memorial hospital. Laura was unhurt while a girlfriend riding with her suffered only minor injuries. Exacerbating the tragedy, Douglas' dad was following his son in a separate car and came upon the accident scene immediately after it happened.

3. Oh man, I wouldn't dare put that on my car.
It's true most people wouldn't know what it mean but I wouldn't want to dwell on that tragic accident. I'll admit when I first found out about it, I would remind repuglicans every way I can especially if they brought up that Vince Foster crap.

4. The difference between us and them
If we were the wingnuts, we would spend months upon months discussing Laura Bush's accident, tossing out wild theories that it was actually murder.

I would rather for the most part, for us to be tough but fair. Hammer them hard, but not sink into the morass of hate that the kooks plunged into willingly in their effort to get Clinton any way they can.

The smirking chimp has genuinely done enough f'ed up things for us not to get into silly territory.

That being said, it is ironic that the one person Laura killed with her car was her ex-boy friend. What are the odds on that? ;)

11. We are not the wingnuts...
and we have a right to be proud of our avoidance of this tabloid topic. I am sure Laura pays for this horrible event every day in her mind...let it be.

I am a liberal and I do not demand perfection of others and I will not exploit such a tragic thing. Keep Liberal synonymous with class and mention this no more. She is not the president.

The bumper sticker is in poor taste. It is a bumper sticker, a bourgeois appliqué of low class birth. Who the fuck cares about out those platitudinous wastes of paper anyway?

13. Even more delicious irony:
I seem to remember reading once that her innocent victim was in a Corvair at the time, the same car that made Ralph Nader famous enough to eventually run for President. The rest is history.

8. Thanks for the details...
...of course the first thing that enters my mind is: Was she drunk? Back in 1963 unless she was falling down dead drunk, I don't think she would have been caught. I don't think they had breathalizers then--or am I wrong?

15. That's horrible
Really that borders on distaste. It wasn't on purpose, what she did. I mean... sheesh. That was when she was a Democrat, if I'm not mistaken. Before she met Shrub? :eyes:

16. Gawd!
She was a 17 year old kid when that happened, and we don't know anything about who was really at fault. Just another tragic traffic accident.

Isn't it a bit sleazy to bring it up now?
