"I'm only a Republican because I was in the Military"
My neighbor across the street is a die hard pubbie, he's a nice guy who helped my mom and I out when my dad died so I don't challenge him on his politics, but he's not an obnoxious freeper type so its all good.

He works the polls on Election Day, so from time to time he does some campaigning up and down the street for a pubbie canidiate. This time it was the pubbie running for mayor. He seemed like an alright guy, but when my neighbor mentioned to the guy that I'm a Democrat the pubbie said "Well I'm only a republican because I was in the military"

:wtf:

I caught up to them again later and he was doing the usual running-for-office-grandstanding when I told him "you threw me back there when you said you're a republican because you were in the military, when Bush wants to cut veterans benefits". He dodged the comment and went back to political nothingspeak but I think I annoyed my neighbor. Oh well, his fault for supporting people who hurt our troops.

2. I'm involved with someone who just finished 6 years in the Military
and they are a Democrat, as is my father who was in WW2, and both my Grandfathers who were in WW1. I just got off the phone with my 79 year old Shrub hating aunt who was in the Waves and then the WACS during WW2. People are brain dead who talk about Repukes all being military.

3. Well, I was in the military too and I'm obviously a Dem
So is my brother and so is my aunt (retired after 23 years in the Air Force). So was grandpa G. So was his dad. So is my nephew. Ad infinitum.
John
My dad was a Republican (a moderate one) but he was on the dark side long before he went into the service. And he was still open-minded enough to marry my pinko, quasi-socialist mother (who was 5'4, 120, with red hair and blue eyes, so I don't think politics factored into that too much).

4. Well I'm 'sorta new' at all of this stuff, but it seems to me
that upon some CAREFUL EXAMINATION, the people who have generally called themselves 'republican' have VASTLY different ideas of what that word means in comparison to the group that is in power now and going by the name 'republican'. I wish more 'old-style' republicans would recognize and acknowledge this.

5. I agree
The guy I mentioned above admitted he was really a Libaritarian at heart and was only fiscally conservative. He actually seemed interested in DU (he saw my bumper sticker), hell he might even lurk here!

7. personal experience
I was speaking with my g/f about this, who was at a military academy up until recently, and whose immediate family is Army.

Basically, former blunders (real, or apparent) in Democratic strategy for troop deployment have contributed to a group-think in the military pushing towards the Republican party.

For instance, my g/f is a leftist Libertarian who leans Communist, but still dislikes the Republican party over the Democratic party. I honestly don't understand it - but perhaps it's the same sort of bias that prevents me from voting for New England Republicans, whom are known to be far less evil than the Southern variety.
