Words of wisdom from a locked thread |
|
Generic Other had this to say today.
Let's face it, flamefests happen all the time on DU. Only a few people use them as an opportunity to squelch ideas they don't like. They bait others, wait for reactions, then turn informant and get the threads locked. Sort of like how the Gestapo worked and the one thing I find objectionable about DU. Thread locking is not used to prevent outside disruptor behavior half as often as it is used to suppress the views of longstanding members that other members have personal issues with.
Seems to be the way our Democracy has been working of late.
Anybody dare to comment?

1. As a former DU mod, I can fully guarantee you |

that this is simply not true. We discuss every alert, treating each case individually, without prejudice towards 'ideas we do or don't like'. Consistently, threads that we may not agree with are left to stand if we don't feel they are specifically disruptive.
And that's all there is to it. Really.

Yes, many threads, perhaps even more threads are locked owing to internal conflagration than are locked owing to the influence of outside disruptors. Since it seems the disruptors are summarily banned and the threads are allowed to remain as long as they're basically civil in tone.
The problem as I see it, is that so many longtime regulars have so much vitriol attached to a few of their pet issues that polite, gainful, rational discussion on those subjects is unlikely if not impossible.
Rather than presuming that we've got a gang of intellectual thugs trying to take us down as individuals, it would be of benefit to do some serious soul-searching about whether we could all have been a bit more sensitive and elucidating. Or is it just too important to score a 'hit' when we post.

in discussions, at the expense of someone else, is flat boring and a rather silly pastime for an adult.

Perhaps the "longstanding members" who's opinions are being "supressed" should learn to communicate and debate without insulting or denigrating their fellow DUers.
Remember, DU is not a democracy, it's a privately owned internet forum that is subject to the rules and regulations imposed by it's owner(s). I can live with that, (and have for about 2 years now) can you?

Questions/concerns about DU policy should be posted in ATA.
