3. I don't know...
but I am distantly related to him through my grandfather, whose name was Isaac and also called Ike.

Our side of the family has always been staunchly democrat, though.

(Sorry I don't have an answer for you.)

4. Nicknames don't always make perfect sense
so Margaret becomes Peggy,Richard becomes Dick,Henry is Hank or Hal...and so on.

5. Dunno-- seems to have had it most of his life.
Didn't spend all that much time looking it up, but I did come across a complete copy of this very interesting, and oft quoted, speech:

http://www.eisenhower.utexas.edu/chance.htm

Remember, this was just after WW11 and the winding up of Korea, with Stalin a very real memory. Everyone on earth had been touched by a real war against genuine evil, and feared another evil possibly just as great. Or greater.

The guy who kicked Hitler's ass prays for peace with the Soviets.

The warrior who hopes for a better way than war.
