Concert Review: Scissor Sisters

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - True to their name, the Scissor Sisters cut up pieces of pop music from the past three decades and then paste 'em back together with a wink.

This New York group already is gaining a rabid cult following, gay and straight, and all were out in force to fill up the Avalon on Wednesday night.

The band kicked off with the oh-so Elton John-ish "Take Your Mama," from its self-titled Polydor/Universal debut, and it was 1970s redux. The swooping vocals of Jake Shears and Ana Matronic (gotta love those names) entwined while they teased each other and the audience.

Matronic was a hoot -- brassy and ballsy. She came off like a true daughter of TV's Peg Bundy, with her strawberry blond hair big in bangs, wearing a short black dress featuring a large picture of ultrabusty 1950s sexpot icon Jayne Mansfield. Partner Shears was clad in tight leather pants, with his shirt unbuttoned down to his waist (it later came off, to audience shrieks) as he danced and struck poses.
