Good morning from sunny Norway!
My last effort has been archived:

Ach, we'll have to start from scratch again then.
This morning the papers are full of how Kerry won last night's debate, which makes for a good start to this last working day of the week.

Good morning!

26. Actually, having had an American boyfriend,
who's currently in the Air Force, working on sensitive material (intelligence analysis), they already know who I am. He has to admit to his foreign girlfriend everytime they renew or up his security clearance. I wouldn't put it past them to have checked up on me, and my activities on the net. There's a reason why I'm not taking the chance of returning to the US until after Jan 21 if Kerry's elected.

As for my 'foreign' word, that was just Fall break! (Norwegian schools have Fall breaks, remnants of the time when most of the pupils were needed on the farm to harvest potatoes - as a teacher, I get to share in the bliss of vacation, even tho I have a ton of paperwork to do.)

And all of Norway is dark in December. It's got to do with the latitude. It's not called the land of the midnight sun for nothing (and corresponds to midday night during winter.) Alaskans experience the same.

14. and good morning to you from not-so-sunny San Francisco!
A few questions:

(1) How popular is Turbonegro?

(2) How famous and/or infamous is Varg Vikernes?

(3) How popular (or/not) is Bush? (I'm sure everyone can guess the answer to that question.)

17. Great, a Turboneger-fan! :)
Your answers:

(1) In Norway, extremely popular. Their last CD "Apocalypse Dudes" is in my opinion the very best rock'n'roll CD ever released by a Norwegian group. They're Norway's biggest band and enjoy a massive popularity here. I've tried to get tickets for their last three concerts in Oslo, but they were all sold within something like 10 minutes. I know that Turbo is quite popular abroad and also in the US. (They call themselves Turboneger in Norway)

(2) Well, he only burnt down a dozen ancient, 1000-year old stave churches, founded black metal and killed his best friend in a rather horrific manner....so he's famous, all right. He's not a satanist anymore though, apparently he has converted to nazism and is now a fanatic nazi. Still a major league c*nt though, mind you. He's jailed for 21 years for the murder back in 1993, but will probably be out on parole in 3/4 years' time.

(3) We can't stand him. I saw a poll the other day where 7% of those asked would have voted for Bush. 90% would have voted for Kerry. Says it all really.

Anything else? Ask away, I love educating people on the craic in my country! :D

The other day, I found out something that I didn't know, that Norway is a member of the coalition of the willing! I had no idea! Al Franken was talking about it, that Norway has sent 10 soldiers that are stationed in Kuwait, repairing vehicles! Bush* should have mentioned them in the debate, rather than harping on Poland, since the very next day, Poland announced their intention to withdraw...

61. Ashamedly, I must admit we are
Thanks to the spineless hyenas in our Government. Something like 90 per cent of the population were and remain opposed to both Bush and the Iraqi war, but they sent troops none the less. They're claiming that our lads aren't participating in any hostilities, as well. Soldiers returning from Iraq have emphatically stated the opposite, as you'd expect.

62. I was surprised, but not shocked, to learn Norway sent troops
An overwhelming percentage of the British population opposed this war, and took to the streets by the tens of thousands, to protest, as well as the Australian people. Here in the United States, tens of thousands took to the streets, including me and my friends, but Bush* ignored us, a warning by Nelson Mandela, the U.N., his Secretary of State, the only member of his administration who has served in the military, and his own Congress, in his rush to preemptive war. It's turned around to bite him, but he still isn't backing down. He claims to have made no mistakes, which is not human and very scary. I imagine that the reports you've heard about Norwegian soldiers being involved in hostilities are true, though I would think that Al Franken would be the last one who'd be afraid to report the truth. Let's hope that the Norwegians really do remain in Kuwait. More Americans were killed, today, and some American soldiers are refusing to undertake what they call "suicide missions" because things have gotten so dangerous in Iraq and they lack the proper protection. I think this phenomenon can only spread, once this story circulates.

64. Good morning to you!
It has been raining here, as well. A typical New York autumn. I have to take my dogs to the vet this week, 40 minutes south of here, but when I checked the weather, both on TV and on-line, it showed rain every single day, for the next seven days. It's rained two out of the last three times I've driven there, once so hard that I had to pull over, since I just couldn't see, and the other time I was stuck in a store, since it was teeming too hard to make a run for the car. I hate rain, but snow is worse.;(

Good morning from rainy New York.:-(

65. Monday, bloody monday
Lillestrøm drew 0-0 at home to Bodø last night in the third last match of this horrid season. We had rain, moist air and 5 degrees centigrade and hence froze our collective arses off. There were two scoring opportunities during the match, it was played at the pace of a snail during the first half and that of a DEAD snail in the second, and everyone went home angry, disappointed and annoyed. National newspaper Dagbladet sum it up beautifully here:
"Cold. Boring. Crap."

At least that shit is behind me now - good morning! Winter is fast approaching here! :)

68. Good afternoon to you from another dull place...
Beautiful Republic, Washington.
How dull is it here? We don't have a stoplight in the entire county, or even a fast food franchise. We have 3 and 1/2 people per square mile because it's mostly National Forest, and our weekly paper NEVER names names for fear of losing half its purchasers, and the old time families are a strange mixture of Native Americans and miners and ranchers/loggers. Snowmobiles are allowed on the main street in winter.
Having lived in Norway many years ago, I know it's even MORE dull here, and that's saying something! Maybe we could apply to become a part of Norway, we sure could use your health-care system here, and Norwegian isn't too hard to learn! We DO have the only broadband cable-internet system for 40 miles in any direction, though!
Life is GOOD in dullsville!
:hi:

70. That does sound boring :-)
Although our health system really isn't all it's made up to be. The queues of people waiting upwards of a year for vital surgery in the public hospitals would testify to that...

I love the fact of snowmobiles being allowed in the streets during the winter, he-he! :)

Anyway, glad to see you. I think this is the first time I've posted on one of your threads.

It's about 3:30 am in Ohio right now and we've been getting drizzle for the past few days and about 50 degrees F.

Do you follow American sports much? And if so who are you rooting for in our baseball playoffs?

81. You are involved with football, aren't you, LOL!
What do you think of the American baseball playoffs, or don't you care? This has become a huge news story, over here, because Boston hasn't won a world series since the early part of the last century, supposedly because they traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees, their traditional nemesis, and a playoff series has never gone to seven games before.
:wow:

As for me, I had intended to watch political movies with some friends and march with Kerry signs in the downtown district of my, mostly Republican, small town. But it was called off because the founder of this group is going away. Maybe it's just as well, since there's always the chance that we would have been run over. My mother said that she saw a car with a Kerry-Edwards bumper sticker, this afternoon, and wondered with "the a**hole" was (her word), then noticed the license plate and realized that it was me.

83. Baseball and that...
...well, I can't honestly say I care, but obviously what Boston has done is a magnificent effort, coming back from 0-3 in games to win the playoff series. It even made the evening news here last night, which REALLY is saying something. Baseball & american football are non-sports here usually, so I was surprised to say the least to see it on the news last night. Well done Boston :)

I might be coming over to Boston in March, actually. There is something called the Euro League in table hockey, and this season Boston has been added as an extra tournament to aid the emerging North American table hockey community. Prices are a bit stiff however, so I will probably have to postpone it until next season, but sooner or later, I'll be there :)

(the Americans aren't too good at table hockey anyway, so I'll probably win the whole damned tournament, which would make a nice change from finishing 8th or 9th in all the tournaments in Norway!)

90. Have you ever visited the U.S.?
I told you that the closest I have ever come to Norway was a brief visit to Finland, which I always thought I'd like to return to. Boston is one of my favorite cities. It is a big city, but doesn't feel like it, since it is comprised of neighborhoods. I hate big cities, but felt totally comfortable in Boston. Let your friends on DU know, since there are a lot of DUers in Boston, like Will Pitt. I am about five hours away.

It would be really cool if you won. I'm sure that you'd get a lot of support from your American DU friends.:-)

76. Hello!
Many Norwegians are a bit apprehensive about Americans these days, thanks to what Bush & co. have been up to over the last four years. But it's not as if you'll be met with hostility here, especially not if you're an outspoken anti-Busher :)

We're pretty open-minded over here and if you'll come over, you'll have a good time I'm sure. Word of advice though: It's nearly winter here, meaning 5 months of crap weather. Come over in May, it's a lot nicer!

Sorry about that, it's been something like nine years since I practised my German (which used to be quite good. Hmmm)

Q: How does a German laugh?
A: He doesn't. ;)

If you're going to bike to Nordkapp and Lofoten I'm sure you're aware of the distance, but I'll repeat it anyway: Something like 3000 kilometers from the German border. And that's just one way :)

Most important was I could understand you. I learned quite some Italian and Spanish just from travelling and talking a lot, and believe me, I made (and make) a lot of mistakes. But I generally find that people are very pleased if you honour their native language.

And yes, I know the distance to Nordkapp. That's why I won't do it anytime soon, having only limited time for holidays. The distance itself is no problem, I can cover 80-120 km per day for a long time.

Grüße und ein schönes Wochenende - here the weather is, contrary to the forecasts, pretty wet.

I cringe to hear the reports coming out of Florida and Ohio, and early voting isn't allowed in most states. I'm just very afraid that things will turn ugly on Tuesday, as has been repeatedly predicted. Also, if it's close, it could wind up in the courts again. They say that a few thousand lawyers are ready and waiting, but how much of a mess would that turn out to be? What I'm counting on is that John Kerry will win by a substantial enough margin to head off a recount. We also keep hearing, by the likes of Joe Trippi and Jesse Jackson, that the thousands of newly-registered, very young voters, could make a substantial difference and they haven't been counted in any of the polls.

117. Good morning on a bleedin' freezing Thursday!
Little laddie Aksel woke me up in a brutal fashion this morning: My wife had taken him into our bed when he woke up around 5am, and as I was lying there around 8am, half-asleep and getting mentally ready to get out of bed and go to work, the wee 'un is already awake - he grabs my chest hair with both of his little hands and pulls. So, this morning I woke up cursing and in pain. Jesus F H Christ, that hurt!!!

By the way, here's something I found on the 'net today:

It's a Norwegian site dedicated to collecting enough money to put a bounty on GWB's head and have him shot, although I think it's rather tongue in cheek...

120. A Friday treat: Look at this happy little boy!
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 07:50 AM by trigz
Aksel has already taken a liking for football, as you all can see :)

edit: How the heck do I make the pictures turn up, physically, in the post? Now I type in the URL, and the only thing that comes up is a link to the picture and the text "Image". Why?!

121. Hi trigz,
could be some feature of geocities that doesn't allow the picture to appear. Your code in DU seems to be perfectly valid.

Have a good, loong weekend!

123. Yep, I think that's the problem
I'll be using photobucket for pictures from now on I think. Anyway, nice son I've got there, don't you think? :)

122. Maybe if you rename the image so the .JPG ending is in lowercase? (nt)

124. Nope, that only messes up the link...
...making it faulty. Understand it if you can.

125. Good evening!
2-2 in Lillestrøm's last match today, but delight, delight: Arch rivals Vålerenga LOST the league title on the last day of the season, on goal difference.

Schadenfreude is sweet indeed! Good evening, all :)

128. Yahoo! A day off! And here's a real treat for you all:
It's Monday, but delightfully, I'm not at work with today being a bank holiday in Italy. So, I'm at home playing with my little son and beautiful wife -

now, if THIS
doesn't qualify as a classic picture I don't know what does. That's Aksel under water, wearing a home-knitted yellow and black hat with the writing "FUGLA" (Lillestrøm's nickname) in front.

Hope that lightens up your day - now go vote and throw the Filty Maggot out of the White House. GO KERRY!

131. Spot on
"Fugla" means "the birds". It's actually an abbreviation of "Kanarifuglene" - "the Canaries" (we play in yellow and black jerseys, y'see :))

132. Bird=Vogel in German
It's quite interesting to see how many words in ancient nordic and germanic languages are related!

133. Speaking of Germans:
Our new head coach is Uwe Rösler, he of former Manchester City and Kaiserslautern fame. He took over as boss yesterday, in fact. I have high hopes for the big man.

How do you say "Der Uwe, you da man!" in German? I'm making a huge banner for the start of next season, you see (not to hurry, I have until April 2005 to get it done!) :-)

134. I know, the title of this thread is utterly inappropriate today
But life must go on. For you, the fight must go on, too.

Keep the spirit, my friends, Canada is just across the border.

139. Good morning?
Hopefully the worst disappointment has sunk in and gone away again...

...who am I kidding. I'm half a world away, and I'm still fuming myself.

Good morning, friends. Have a hug from me.
