My dog got skunked last night - any tips much appreciated!
I already gave her a tomato juice bath and followed that with some of that Nature's Miracle Skunk Neutralizer and that knocked it down quite a bit. Now she has the faint odor of tomatoes and skunk ;-) .

The main problem now is the smell lingers in the house- mainly the bedroom. I've treated the areas she contaminated (which luckily were small as she came in the dog-door and hopped immediately up on the bed, where I caught her and stopped her from getting to the rest of the house). I've got the windows open, fans going and candles burning. Any other ideas? What should I wash the bedding and clothes that got contaminated with? Are they a lost cause?

1. Here's some stuff that destroys skunk odors
Enzyme-based cleaner. I used it on a cat that got skunked once.

For the record, I receive no benefits from sales of this product. I just use it and like it. It's great stuff:

3. Never seen that one
thanks. The stuff I've been using says it's an enzyme based cleaner too but if it doesn't do the trick I'll try yours.

2. soak the bedding in febreze - it'll neutralize a lot of the odor
there's even a wash machine additive that you can use.

On the carpet use a baking soda based carpet powder and work it in and let it absorb the odors.

After vacuuming, finish with more "extra strength" febreze. As for doggie - take her to a pet groomer and let them take care of it.

6. Good idea
I hate the smell of Febreze, but I hate the smell of skunk more!

Pet groomer isn't a bad idea, that would be a first for her.

I haven't made it out to the store just yet (this happened near midnight last night) so I put some plain baking powder down on the carpet and that helped some. I think I'll try that carpet powder idea once I get to the store. I think I did that the last time this happened and it really helped. Thanks!

4. My two dogs got skunked a few weeks ago.
I had no tomato juice, but I had spagetti sauce. Poured 2 jars on them. I thew up from the combined smell of sauce and skunk. My older dog Henry licked the mushrooms off his face as I poured the sauce. Got online to see se-skunk recipes. Ran to the store at 11:00pm for hydrogen peroxide, baking soda. That worked pretty good.
As far as the insdie smell goes, only time dissipates that. Air your house out as much as possible.
Good luck.

7. Too funny about the mushrooms!
luckily I had 4 large cans of tomato juice on hand from about 4 years ago when my last dog got skunked. I live in the mountains so it is a common occurrence. We've had baby skunks hanging around for weeks so I sorta knew this was coming eventually.

Tasha was licking the tomato juice off herself too. It probably helped her get rid of the skunk juice taste in her mouth. She had been drooling badly up until then.

Thanks!

5. THIS WORKS
They did it on the TLC show Mythbusters.

Mix hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a few drops of dish soap.

The H2O2 oxidizes the skunk odor molecules and destroys them. Use it on surfaces, etc.

8. Yes. I just saw that episode as well.
Do it. They proved that it works.

Found this recipe for it online:

Skunk Smell Remover

1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dish Detergent.

Mix the ingredients in a large bowl, because it will boil up like Vesuvius. We are, after all, making an oxygen generator. Wash the dog with this while it is still foaming, because it is the oxygen which reacts with the thiols in the skunk stink to neutralize the odor. If it sits around, it will loose it's efficacy because the oxygen boils off. Don't try to store it in an airtight container, because it will blow up. The brew also works for clothes, humans and unlucky cats.

Good luck!!

10. Thanks!
Good point about the foaming effectiveness. I may give her another bath with this and I'll definitely wash the linens etc. in it. I was looking for something to do the laundry with so this is great!

15. Wasn't that one of the funnier bits they've done?
Trying to get sprayed by a skunk? What did it take, 3 or 4 skunks before they finally got skunked? After taking it into the WOMEN's bathroom to scare it? Hahaha. I love that show.

17. Very funny segment.
But if you watch the show, it isn't really unusual. Nothing ever works for them the first time.

But the second, third, fourth, fifth, etc...?
Hilarious.

13. Heh, heh! True!
Luckily that's the only thing my dog has in common with Shrub - getting skunked last night. She's a Border Collie, so I know for a fact her IQ is higher than his.
