Just saw a car even uglier than the Aztec.
Honest!

It went through my apartment building's driveway, this car, the Toyota Scion.
(The one I saw was white though.)

This car is rather small.

But boxey, you bet.

17. Perhaps this is the genesis...
Nissan introduced the Chappo concept car in 2001. The name was supposed to mean "hat". You know, as in "chapeau"? (except that they tried to westernize the name - kinda got lost in he translation, methinks) At least that's what the dudes from Nissan told me when I was designing the on-board navigation software for it.

-snip
The direction for the Chappo came from head of design Shiro Nakamura, and was developed at the Nissan Technical Centre in Japan. The project typifies a new energy in Nissan’s creative operations. It is a concept which breaks the bounds of convention, yet retains an eye on reality. The Chappo concept is based on the idea of a house over-looking a Zen garden. It is defined by Nissan’s designers as a "room on wheels" and the garden can be anything from an urban cityscape to a beautiful bay.

After that, it started becoming a popular new style in Japan.

2. Yes, uglier than the Element, too.
I have seen a couple on the road and they are dangerous - they are head-turningly ugly and could cause accidents.

6. Yep, that's ugly alright!
I've seen a few around town. Even Oprah couldn't give that away! Even so, the 1968 AMC Marlin still holds the record for hands-down ugly.

11. The early-mid seventies Matador was awful, too.
How could AMC do such a good job with the original Javelin and then hork it up so badly with the Marlin and Matador? Oh, yeah -- and the Pacer and Gremlin. And the Eagle. Never mind -- the Javelin was the outlier.

18. I had lots of friends who had them.
Don't get me wrong -- they were cast-iron workhorses. They did look silly, though.

I can't say much -- I drove two of the biggest lemons ever made, a '74 Vega and a '78 Plymouth Horizon. Both were the biggest pieces of crap ever to roll off an assembly line -- especially the Horizon.

15. I agree. The circa 1974 AMC Matador was one of the ugliest cars...
... ever to roll of an assembly line.

Epic in it's ugliness.

19. That's the one!
The ass-end looks even worse -- four big round red lights spaced too far apart to look like a designer had bothered with his micrometer. Not sure what they were going for, there -- it kind of looks like a crocodile, doesn't it? A guy I went to high school with had one in electric blue -- monumentally ugly!

21. Beacuse space is a valuable commodity in Japan...
Parking those things is easy as eating pie.

They are roomy on the inside.

I actually kind of like them, they grow on you after a while. I'd much rather see these than those godawful whatever-the-fuck-the-name-was of those big ugly trucks were that everyone was posting about maybe 2 weeks ago. You know, the ones that are bigger than the Hummer2 and Navigator combined....

25. I agree with you...
I worked on one of those boxy things (see my post# 17 above) and at first I hated the boxy look but after awhile the look grew on me. The interior was awesome.

and yeah, sure does beat those new CXTs we were talking about the other day.
