Bush "staying the course" in lowering expectations.
"You've got to stay the course," the President said. "Pick one position and stick with it. John Kerry is simply a better candidate than I am, and he always will be. I don't even know how I got here."

President Bush set the bar even lower for their next match-up on October 8. "Heck, by the third debate, I bet I'll be reduced to a quivering mass of Jell-O."

well he's gonna have a hard time in the next one, being not good with the american people will hurt him. Remember also that the first debate is the most watched, and has recently been a key factor.
