Hmmm, Kerry does great last night. Plume of white smoke from Mt. St. Helens. Coincidence?

(Alright, only joking - the christian right does this all the time, just throwin a little back at them ...)

Or his virgin daughter?

15. Steam Cloud Rises Above Mount St. Helens
http://www.thejacksonchannel.com/weather/3777376/detail.html

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A steam eruption has started at the Mount St. Helens volcano in Washington state. A cloud has risen above the crater rim.

Earthquakes have rumbled under the volcano in recent days, and scientists said Friday they still believed there was a 70 percent chance of a small eruption.

An eruption could shower the mountain with rocks, send up a cloud of ash, or ooze magma in the crater. But scientists do not expect a repeat of the 1980 blast, which killed 57 people.

Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver issued a volcano advisory Thursday. They reported three or four quakes a minute with the largest a magnitude 3.3. All the earthquakes were still shallow and in or below the lava dome.

21. The steam & ash cloud is dissipating.
Even though we have east winds right now, it doesn't look like it's going to come close to Vancouver or Portland. The last shots I saw on local news look more like haze than an ash cloud.

24. Tourists flock to St. Helens for look at rumbling volcano;some want action
http://www.canada.com/travel/story.html?id=4e627da5-d0ee-43ba-92fa-a8489a792eb6

MOUNT ST. HELENS, Wash. (AP) - Camcorder in hand, Sheri Ray stood on Johnston Ridge - named for a man who died in the cataclysmic eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 - and waited impatiently for the volcano to blow again.

"I thought I was going to feel earthquakes," she said, frowning. "I'm mad."

Even as scientists warn that Mount St. Helens may be about to blow, tourists are flocking to the peak, drawn by the intensifying rumblings from the most cantankerous mountain in the United States, but reassured by predictions that any eruption would be far smaller than the one that killed 57 people more than two decades ago.

Ray, 28, a bartender from Vancouver, Wash., and her husband, Dustin, called in sick to spend the day hoping for an eruption - just not a big one.

"If it's anything like it was last time, I don't want to be here," Dustin Ray said. "It makes you wonder how safe it is to be here."

Luckily it's a small eruption. The ash cloud is heading this way but will probably dissipate before it gets here.

especially for us living in the PNW who are either very close to the volcano or who have friends/family members who are.

29. Hello, I can answer that
LBN shouldn't contain television shows announcements with no link to an online source. You could imagine what would happen if every little event like this was allowed. Ex: "Kerry giving speech..turn on CNN"
etc.

Also it has no political content.

I wish I had caught it sooner and then it would have been no problem, but we have to be consistent.

As far as political content. Just imagine what would happen if every little piece of new was allowed. "Michael Jackson gets new facelift"

33. You're equating a volcano erupting with Michael Jackson?
You've got to be kidding me. I live less than 100 miles from that volcano. The last time it erupted, the town I currently live in was covered in SEVERAL inches of ash.

There are plenty of things in LBN that aren't political in nature, NOR are they 'infotainment" bullshit news stories about michael jackson or brittney spears that DO qualify as LBN.

Why move it to the Lounge> Why not at least General Discussion? I thought the lounge was about levity, not the continental US's most active volcano erupting

31. I didn't know that LBN *ONLY* allowed political content
Look in the days/weeks prior to those hurricanes hitting Florida--there were daily Updates wrt the hurricane's position, etc. Those weren't moved or locked unless the post was a dupe of that day's position of the hurricane. THOSE weren't political in nature, but rather general information for ALL DU'ers who were interested/concerned/in the path of the hurricane, etc.

Also, in this thread re: Mt St Helens, there are several links to the USGS site showing the explosion.

Can this be moved BACK to LBN? It's surely late-breaking to us who live in the area around Mt St Helens and for those who have friends/family members in the area as well.

34. Uh...
In the past, there's never seemed to be a problem with referring to immediate breaking news on the networks, since there usually isn't a link available. And what's this about political content? A volcano erupting isn't news in and of itself? I don't mean to be rude, but this just strikes me as silly.

35. There's 2 more threads in LBN about Volcanos (MSH & a mexican one)
Since those have "no political content" either, I alerted for those, and all other LBN threads that aren't political to be locked/moved just like this one is.

We must be consistent!!! :eyes:

I'm still baffled why, in September, there were over 40 threads devoted to the hurricanes that weren't political in nature, but those were allowed to stay and fall into the archives and THEY weren't locked or moved to the lounge.

Consistency, indeed!
