I used to be a "Young Republican"
I confess. It was back in the early 70s and I actually campaigned for Nixon and had actual Nixon memorabilia for years (it got taken in one of my many moves). My only out is that I was only 16 and the Pubs were rich, had huge houses and gave great parties with lots of beer and it seemed like a cool way to get connected. It lasted until I went to UC Davis in 73. Am I fickle? I became a Dem in 74 and have remained so ever since. I guess I can justify it in that Nixon may have been a criminal *hole, but he was a moderate and created the EPA.

2. At least you weren't campaigning for George Wallace...
And, as Michael Moore said, Nixon was our last liberal president. Normalized realtions w/ China (or at least got the ball rolling), signed numerous anti-nuke treaties, created the EPA, signed the clean air and water act...

4. Nixon in a way was the republican clinton
hated by his opposition party but sometimes sided with them. The Nixon before he was prsident was even more moderate, a friend of Jackie Robinson, a member of the NAACP, I would support a democrat over Dick but as far as anything goes, hes better than Bush.

7. Nixon was a terrible racist
If that's the right term. Have you read the things he said about "the Jews?" I'm no big fan of the Israeli state, but that's different than "the Jews."

8. He had the same problem with African-Americans, too
As the tapes show, and exposes of his dirty tricks campaigns have shown. He was a total bastard, and was still better than what we've got today.

14. yep
McGovern would have gotten my vote if I had been old enough (I was 6). I don't remember if Nixon served in military or not. But he was one paranoid, menacing bitch. Still, as Argumentus points out, he was heaven compared to Dubya.

3. Me too.
I used to support Bush, but when he began to deny allowing our congressman viewing of the evidence, I became suspect.

All I had to do from there was think, And I became a liberal.

9. and he had the good sense to resign
the crooks now are still robbing us for all we're worth. Even if they lose this election, they still made out like bandits and are not disgraced the way Nixon was.

16. of course he really didn't have any choice
He knew that he was going to be impeached and convicted. Back then, there were some honorable people in the Republican party, like Senator Howard Baker, among others. The Republican party of today would make excuses for Bush if he anally raped a small Iraqi boy on national television.
