Gateway memory question. Help!? |
|
Gateway puts out a branded memory.
Other memory companies put out branded Gateway and generic memory.
My old Gateway takes PC 100 SDRAM.
I bought a generic chip and it doesn't seem to fit. Yes it goes in, yes it seemed to click. But the little things that come up to hold it in place are too low. Also, the branded chip already in the pc seems taller.
Did I get the wrong chip? Should I have bought the branded chip (Despite what the salespeople said)?
Or should I have pushed the damn thing in harder?

1. Get your wrist strap on... |

... remove the existing chip and lay it down side by side with the new generic one on some static-proof material. Not only should they look identical, they should also have a code written on them to describe memory type and speed. Those code numbers should be just about the same (may be some slight differences in how each company writes info particular to them).
If the two are not physically identical, don't try forcing it. Broken motherboard's a throwaway.
Cheers.
