And it's not really a smell, it's more like a pheremone issue; that slight odor that's almost sub-aromatic and alters feelings. It is also not "on" or "off" - it's sort of like sliding balance of "male" or "female" in a person.

What's even more odd is that I used to "smell" and subsequently react to one guy I used to know as I would a female - then found out about seven years later that he became a full transgender - his own hormonal structure was more feminine than masculine even then.

It also has nothing to do with hygiene; it is easier to tell a male from female if they don't have good hygiene, but even someone that's obsessively clean will give off a mix of male-heavy or female-heavy pheremones so long as they are not totally emotionally unengaged.

A lot of the ability to tell the difference by scent depends on how sensitive your personal sense of smell and taste is; some people will be able to "smell" the pheremones and other sexual scents, and others won't.
