Interior designers or folks good with colors - a ?
I have a comforter set with matching drapes that is light/medium brown and beige, tiny checked pattern, with damask like accents (beige). The only color I can think to paint the wall is beige. There has got to be a better idea. What other color would be okay with this?

1. You could do something a little more bold, kind of a
rust/orange looking color. . . almost like an adobe type color.

2. Beige is essentially an orange.
Orange and blue are complements, so how about a pale turquoise, or go for the split-complement with a sea-foam green?

3. My first thought was the orange paint in this photo
http://www.benjaminmoore.net/

but I thought it might be too much for someone who leans towards mellow stuff like beige :)

5. I like the rust idea
or if you wanted to be really bold a nice chocolate brown on the wall.

11. Chocolate brown would make the room seem a LOT smaller though
I like the color, but you need a huge room to pull it off :)

4. Since I just updated my gay card
I agree with the other poster. Seafoam green. That would be a perfect accent! :-)

6. Beige and brown are nutrals

you can paint the room almost any color that you want. What do you like? How about a really warm color like a rust red, or even a cherry red? The red below is called Pemegranite but it is the same idea. Isn't that pretty?

Or if you like cool colors there is also deep blue and beige/brown

See if you don't think these colors are pretty together.

10. Yup, I said blue too.
I think blue looks great with brown. But I've found so many people who like to stick with the beige/white colors on the wall.

And I'm NOT saying that because one of my favorite colors is blue and my skin is brown. ;)

7. How about something calming like
sage green? This color works well with everything.

8. Download a program called "phibar"
http://goldennumber.net/color.htm

Input your colors and it'll give you pleasing compliments based on the golden ratio. I plugged my wall and trim colors into it after the fact, and they lined up perfectly, proving that at least in my brain, phi is a good guage of color aesthetics.

9. Putty....or blue?
I think chocolate brown would be a nice choice, actually, but if you don't want to go that dark I'd go with a putty/mushroom/whatever they're calling it color.

Actually, certain purples/blues would look nice with that as well.

If you click on "color selector" at Glidden, can you kind of find a color that matches what you're talking about? I think most things in the "natural & comforting" portion would do okay...depends on how experimental you want to get.

12. White, black pthalo blue, blue -- but what's the floor? That's important.
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 07:28 PM by Rabrrrrrr
lime green if you're really daring

Stay away form the beige on the walls - you'll overdo the room in one color and it will seem sort of, well, bland. Even an all white room can look bland.

Also important, which you didn't mention, is what color is the floor, and what kind of floor?

13. pale green.
goes great with beige. Also some rose tints.

Do you want something that will cause the beige to stand out - go with the pale green, a soft grey, or a light greenish (seafoam?) blue. That would also open the room up. If you want the room to "meld" together or be comfortably cosy, go with a cream, a pale yellowed ivory tone, a brown/sand combination (tonal going up, sort of like a half panel).
If you want to go dramatic, go with rose tints and perhaps a royal purple or dark red.

I've been watching waaaay to many of the british "Changing Rooms" with Lawrence...

15. I painted the living room an adobe(ish) color last year and I really like
it. The trim (chair rail, crownmolding, etc.) is stained a fairly light (medium) oak. The color looks great with deep browns, gold, greens, and ivory - beige colors. It's bold for us, but it was a great change after years of beige walls. Sometimes I think I would like to change the color of the trim, but I don't think that I will paint it. I would look at the trim and the acessories that you plan to have in the room to make a final decision.

17. Neutrals are so versitile
I have my entire house done in soft shades of taupe, creams and black.
My comforter set sounds alot like yours. I would paint the walls
a soft taupe...maybe even try taping one wall and painting it in
wide stripe of contrating taupes. Or maybe even a marble or feather
effect.
The neutrals are great as you can accent with just about any colors
you like. I accent with pillows and matching bowls of potpouri or
drapery scarfs... or throws according to the seasons.
This seems to work great in any room. For color you can also
try a swag of silk vines over your valances.
