2. Hey, man -- glucose tabs!
Me brudda is a Type 1, he keeps either that or a pack of Lifesavers in his pocket at all times. I remember when he played tennis in high school, he had to be careful -- he said he finally learned to just buy a can of Coke and keep it on the sidelines, those Lifesavers turned to mush in the pockets of his tennis shorts!

Take care -- I know what you're dealing with. In my generation, half of us now have either Type 1 or Type 2, and I'm guessing at least one more of us has odds of Type 2 before it's all over. Not me. Yet. Could be, though.

4. Ah, yes..."Combat Tabs"....
I ran out, wasn't anything with quickly-digestable carbs in the house (I was getting ready to go to the store)
You bet I got another bottle of 'em tonight...

I have Typ II

9. Yeah, my older sister has Type II
I have a first cousin who actually had Type I that started in his early thirties. He went from normal to totally insulin-dependent in less than six months, they still don't know what happened. Thing for me is, he's on one side of my family, and there were diabetics on the other side, too. So I watch my weight and pay attention, and I always tell my doctors I'm in 'the zone' as far as people likely to have blood sugar problems. It's about all I can do, I guess!

11. You're doing a lot, actually.
If you're watching your weight and "paying attention", you're ahead of the game.

I took it pretty easy today. Would have been a wonderful day for a leisurely bike ride, even with the 13 MPH west wind, but I just didn't feel up to it.

3. So very sorry, My husband is a type 1 and has been since 13
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 10:56 PM by mzmolly
he had serious reactions at times, and finally moved to the insulin pump. Have you considered it?

Either that or "Lantis" both are more stable than NPH or Regular insulin. I've heard that insulin levels can fluctuate as much as 90% from day to day even if you take the same amount and eat exactly the same thing.

Look into the Pump or Lantis, you'll have much less "low blood sugar" ... my husbands H1C was around 7 at last check.

Good luck. :hi:

Let me know if you have any questions.

5. I have Typ II, it's controlled with pills...
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 11:09 PM by BiggJawn
"Controlled"...Yeah, that's a laugh, isn't it?

Actually, I do OK most the time, except on Fall weekends when my girlfriend starts thinking she's a female version of R. Lee Ermey and I'm a boot... No time to rest, gotta get all that summer stuff struck below and stowed for the winter....

Geeze....Then in 6 months, I gotta haul it all OUT of the basement....

I'd rather go for a 60-mile bike ride...

My doctor wants to see a 6 next quarter. she saw 6.6 last quarter. I'm losing weight at a controlled (read: slow) rate, and other than these Hell weekends, I'm OK most times...Usually stays above 90.

6. My mom is type 2 and refused pills, she controls hers with diet/exercise.
She told the doc that she'd like to try that 'first' and she does beautifully. You may want to consider adjusting your lifestyle and giving that a shot?

Don't let your doctor supercede YOUR own judgement, they don't know YOU like you do.

Good luck! 6.6 is great ... be proud of yourself !

7. That's what I'm working towards.
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 11:54 PM by BiggJawn
Gotta drop about another 70 pounds before that becomes a reality, I think.

I trust this Sawbones. the quack I was seeing was just trying to win the drug salesman's sales contests, my health be damned. I was on SIX difernet meds that cost me almost $150 every month out of pocket, and I couldn't get my morning stick below 200...
now i take 2, one's a generic, and I'm down to $38 a month...I see morning numbers around 140, now...

6.6 IS good! I was at 9 this time last year!

Thanks for the encouragement!

12. Hypo sucks big time
Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 08:41 AM by ze_dscherman
I feel sooo shitty when I'm that low. I HATE that feeling. Thankfully, I've never been to less than 49. I'm getting hypos rarely now, and usually have an "alert" when I'm as low as 75. But when exercising vigorously, it's been pretty difficult to recognize a hypo, because then I don't recognize the sweating/shaking/almost fainting feeling as early.

Many years ago, I've seen a friend going really "mad" when he developed a severe hypo. His girlfriend tried to give him sugar in water, but he just couldn't drink any more. He became uncoherent, panicked, and finally we had to run after him (he had been outside) and force him to lie down - to avoid him running into traffik and not consuming carbs until the ambulance came. Nasty story.

I ALWAYS carry glucose tablets with me. And check my glucose levels before exercising.
