14. My people came from a communist state
in an otherwise democratic country if that makes any sense. The great state of Kerala in the country of India.

One of the few states that were not occupied by the mughal empire. and among the last to join the British empire peacefully. The only part of India where the standard of living is actually HIGHER than in in the US and the literacy rate is higher too. But they don't do anything except drink and party. It's a big vacation spot now.

I have a million of them, having ridden a car with my mother. My host, at that meet-up Friday night, was interested, so I taught him a particular favorite of mine, LOL!:D

31. That IS very impressive. It's not unusual for Russians to speak more than
one language. When I visited a Russian school, we visited an English class, and the kids were only about nine or ten. As for us Ugly Americans, we just assume that everybody else speaks English. And we're usually right!

My grandfather came from a part of Poland that was then considered part of Russia. He was pretty smart, as well, for a poor immigrant. My mother tells me that he spoke three languages, also. Polish, Russian and Slovak. And then when he emigrated to the U.S., of course he learned English.

Russian is particularly difficult, I think, since they have a completely different alphabet.

33. It's really tough, but if you could just learn to speak it, it's easier
My Nana and her peace group tried to learn it before the trip to Russia, but barely got through the alphabet. But when I visited there, I learned enough words to get by. I never had to write it. I think I could learn Russian, or any other language, if I lived there and had to use it. That's what I'd recommend, rather than struggling to learn how to write it, like you are taught in school.

21. As a Lithuanian, I ask, what do you think of...
the Polish-Lithuanian unification of 1569, which combined our two countries into a single commonwealth? Good, bad, or indifferent?

and I'm not really Lithuanian but my grandad who died before I was born was...
My sister just spent the summer in Lithuania and noted the people there never seem to smile...History seems to weigh heavily there...

22. Those of us who are Polish are getting a little nervous
Now that our old country has put a restraining order against Bush, we are wondering whether Bush is going to send out Homeland security to round up the names of any Polish blooded people here in the states. We know how Bush dearly adores Poles and he may stalk us as a second best choice now that he cannot stalk Pres. Kwasniewski.
