Edgar Martinez' last game is today |
|
We were at Safeco last night to watch Edgar. We didn't stay for the after-game festivities because I knew I would have been a huge, tear-dripping mess.
I can only hope that the Mariners front office is smart enough to hire Edgar in whatever capacity he'd like to work in.
Bye Edgar, and thanks for eighteen years. We love you!

1. What an amazing career |
|
And I would be there crying with you... Blubbering like Dave Niehaus on a vodka bender. My oh MY!
Surely they can hire him as a batting coach or front office job. I would prefer coach, because he loves the game too much not to be in the dugout and among the players. I imagine some of the rookies weren't even born when Edgar joined the Mariners farm team in 1983!
:toast: Here's to retiring #11! We will ALL miss you, every true fan of the game.

2. Edgar is one of the best |
|
This coming from a lifelong Tiger fan. He's busted it off on us more than a couple of times and I'll miss him (except when he's actually playing Detroit). Solid ballplayer. Even a more solid person. Godspeed and best wishes, Edgar. John The Mariners would be idiots NOT to hire Edgar. If they don't, some other team will (in a minute).

3. Man, I cried like a baby last night |

Edgar is my last baseball hero. I was 12 years old when I became a baseball fan and it was Edgar's rookie season.
I simply cannot comprehend being a baseball fan without him.
It sure was cool to see Selig rename the DH of the Year award to the Edgar Martinez Award though...

Has he not spent his entire career w/ the Ms? Thank God (or whoever) for the DH rule! I have a friend who worked with him on a Home Depot ad, and said he was the nicest friendliest guy he worked with, and his wife and kids were extremely nice as well.
Sweet Edgar M

Started in the farm system in 1983, and came up through the ranks to be a one-team career player. No one like THAT anymore.
I grew up on NL ball (Cubs and Dodgers mostly), so when I moved to Seattle in '88, I was happy to be in a MLB town (hadn't lived in one before), but kind of disappointed it was the AL.
However, I converted easily, and went to the games dutifully, inside that rank Kingdome, even on sunny July days. I was a Lefebrve-Believer, and laughed at the cheesy S.S. Mariner blasting its cannon for every HR. Loved watching Harold Reynolds, Alvin Davis, and Edgar. Jay Buhner, and a pre-whiny asshat Ken Griffey Jr. too.
Then Lou came along, and Mariners fans could actually brag about their team!
