Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 05:45 PM by Kahuna
basically by just the normal accidental smashing of toes into a household object. My middle aged friend just broke her whole foot by twisting it. :wow: A couple of years ago, she broke her ankle by twisting it. :wow:

8. And how and when did my knees get wrinkled?
What? What? (Please don't pun on the suck thing.) One day I looked down to my body all confident and I was smooth and shiny. The next day I looked down to my body all confident and I looked like a rumpled Kleenex.

I have frown lines, and I'm not frowning. I have smile lines, and I'm not smiling. I have forehead lines from lifting an eyebrow at children telling me something incredible, incredible, I tell you! It is just unbelievable what happens. You wouldn't believe it. And most of the time, you shouldn't.

All I want is my 22 year old body with my 44 year old mind inside it.

44. it's odd because I felt that way for a while after having a kid
but now that I have more time to exercise, things seem to take care of themselves... but obviously there is more effort needed when you are "mature." I think when people are younger they take their health, body, fitness, what have you for granted. :)

48. Don't forget about things breaking.
I just had an MRI for some problem with my right hip that just came up out of the blue. I have no idea what caused it, other than the fact that I'm 41 and putting on a few pounds. Now it will be even harder as my body just won't let me do some of the stuff I used to do. It SUX0RZ!

13. Strength training, strength training, strength training...
I can't tell you all enough times how much better this has made me feel. You *feel* things going on immediately, with a slight soreness that's actually pleasurable -- you're aware of muscles you forgot you had. You sleep much better and those last few minutes in bed every morning are pure joy, you feel so refreshed and relaxed.

In a month your body starts looking much better. A month after that, even better still. And so on.

Around month three, you suddenly notice that people are much friendlier than they used to be. You get lots more approving looks that you didn't get a few months earlier. And thanks to the cardio workouts, lots of activities are easier than they used to be & you can keep at them longer.

It's addictive. And anyone can start, no matter how old.

Since May I've lost 15 lbs, built muscle, lost many inches around my waist, I'm in the best shape I've been in since the mid 80s, and most importantly I'm no longer a dead ringer for Karl Rove.

Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 08:04 PM by Vitruvius
And brains are what's most important in a woman -- or man -- of any age.

If you aren't spoken for, you could have a delightful relationship with some lucky younger man. (My first love was a May-September romance -- 30 years ago -- with a tough, earthy, and brainy woman a lot like you, and a lot like the woman I was lucky enough to settle down with...)

24. There is more of me and it is either gray or else headed south.
So it goes, I figure.

I'd a whole lot rather be gray or soft or even saggy than cold, stiff, and pushing up daisies.

As an added bonus, my friends are also getting to be middle aged and they are also southbound, gray or fatter. We have banded together and decided slip on tennies are OK, along with elastic in a waistline and maybe even cotton panties...

I have earned my gray hairs, my sags and my crow's feet! I plan to enjoy them!!!

36. Since I've been nice to my bod
it's starts being nicer to me. Less, but healthier food, more exercise (which is fun). Some things get better. Actually, at 41 I'm much more interested in sports than I ever was before. And having some success - losing weight, gaining muscles, getting over health problems or at least controlling the chronic ones - that feels GOOOOD.

I remember the shock of having to cope with the fact that I wouldn't be able to do long trekking tours any more, or only jog(bad knee). So, I switched to long distance bicycle tours - and that is just plain great. I also had to learn to live with diabetes some years - and that just sucks big time. I gained some weight when I started with insulin. Now, after dietetic changes and some more exercise, that is also getting better.

But of course, there are things that are just common with aging. Wrinkles, thinner hair, some graying, some pains - but that's part of the natural cycle of life.

52. Regular gym-goer here too, but, damn, it's..."hard work!"
The most difficult aspect is having to work out like a dog to maintain weight or to knock off a pound.

Then you go on vacation, and you gain five pounds in a couple of days. Just means more hours in the gym.

Not fair! :(

43. I'm counting on you, Skittles!
I'm 46 and exercising (aeorbics and weights) and eating right. It's helped alot, but I feel like I've plateaued in weight loss. My waistline still isn't responding, either.

The good things:
1) I know I'm improving my bone density with weight-bearing exercise;
2) My attitude has improved a little;
3) I feel better overall and have more energy;
4) My plantar's fascitiis has diminished some;
5) I feel good after a meal, not like I need to sleep for a century;
6) My clothes fit better and I look younger, inspite of the gray hair and fine lines.
7) My blood work is superb, along with my vital signs. My doctor is envious.
8) I really do feel like my life expectancy has been extended.

Everyone: Good Luck and Keep up the good work! It does make a difference!

46. Yeah! what you said!
Acually I've always kept in good shape, and despite some very, very bad habits until I was about 30, I still have a great (for me) body at 44. Genetics gave me a lot of muscle for a female, I got these killer cut arms and calves because my aerobics is fast walking with steps and hills. I use light weights,--if I go heavy, I bulk up and look like a body builder. Abdomen I take care of with crunches (although not recently) Face is aging, but I don't care, at least not yet.I eat mostly carbs. It's the way I'm made, it works and I don't question it. My bone density is off the chart, and my blood work is perfect. So, as I enter the world of pre-menopause, wish me luck! I may have some preprogramed genetic snaffu and BOOM! Bad health and mushy body......
