2. "Stand By Me" was extra-special |
|
Even though I've heard it so many times, it still is.....

3. "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)" is awesome... |
|
Really like "I (Who Have Nothing)", and "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem" it goes w/o saying... but there's just something about "Don't Play that Song"... just a knockout of a performance, so damn sad. Though I always thought the intro. a bit too reminiscent of "Stand by Me"...

4. Are you familiar with Aretha Franklin's remake? |
|
She sped up the tempo and essentially turned it into a gospel tune with secular lyrics.
And check this out: Ben E. King's original of "Don't Play That Song" came out on Atco, an Atlantic subsidiary, and peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Eight years later, Aretha's remake came out on the Atlantic label and reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Coincidence? You decide!
