Windows 2000/2003 Servers Gurus - help!
Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 12:22 PM by HawkeyeX
I have a non-functioning Active Directory and my computer keeps getting shut down every hour. I would LOVE to fix the Active Directory problem.

Here's the error that is from the Event Viewer:

Error 1012 (and 1011) - Source: SBCore

Multiple domain controllers running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server have been detected in your domain. To prevent this computer from shutting down in the future, you must remove all but one of these from the domain.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Problem is: I only have one domain controller, and I can't even read it. Help me - and help a neophyte admin.

Thanks in advance!

1. Site for Event ID lookups
Far superior to Microsoft's KB system:

http://www.eventid.net

Here's what they say about Event ID 1012:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=1012&eventno=3481&source=SBCore&phase=1

This event appears to be caused by the fact that SBS 2003 should be the owner of the FSMO roles. 2 weeks after the installation, SBS must hold all the FSMO roles. This requirement is in the Setup and Upgrade Requirement paper. See Q324801 to find out how to view and transfer FSMO roles in Windows Server 2003. Also, check Q234790 to see how to find servers that hold Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO). You can also use ntdsutil to verify that all the roles are indeed back to the SBS, see Q255504.

From a newsgroup post: "SBS 2003 must be running as a DC. Please run the SBS integrated setup to complete the DCpromo process and finish the SBS integrated setup. If you want a member server, then please use regular Windows 2003 OS instead of SBS".

2. That doesn't help
And also, I need to know what the name of the domain controller I'm using.

3. Not sure I understand.
There's only one domain controller, but you don't know its name?

4. Is there a way for me to find out?
I'm practically tearing my hair out trying to figure this out. I had made a fresh reinstall, and this SHIT comes up again.

I'm not touching this one beyond that.
