I have a neighbor whose dog |
|
barks non-stop in the evenings. Already called animal control once. They said they left a complaint notice on their door because they supposedly weren't home; but I know they were. Any suggestions or similar experiences from DUers. The barking is really starting to affect me.
Thanks.

It could be my mangy mutt.
What do you do about a dog like that? I hate my dog. We have a bark collar, which everyone tells me is cruel but is it better than putting him down. They can't be trained. Keeping him inside helps, but dogs like that also need to run off energy. I'll keep him inside at night, but during the day it is maddening.

12. does it help to get the dog a companion dog? |
|
I don't know. I would think that one reason dogs bark is because they are pack animals without a pack, and are lonesome. How sad that you hate your dog. Very, very sad. Maybe you could find it a home out in the country somewhere.

13. I exaggerated my feelings about the dog. |
|
I hate that he barks so much. You may be right about the companion animal-it is other creatures that he is barking at, but we can't take on one more thing.

5. Don't blame the dog for an ignorant owner. If the dog is barking |
|
there is a reason. It may not be obvious but there is a reason, often idiots keep puppies in the house all the time and then as they get older and "less cute" the push them outside to get rid of them for much of the time. The dog just wants things to be the same and doesn't understand what's going on.

Their nature is to bark at birds, it isn't the human's fault.

try talking to the neighbor. They may actually not hear it or not realize how loud it is to other people. See if you two can come up with a solution. Probably the dog is bored and should be brought into the house at night or something, but if they aren't willing to give the dog the necessary attention maybe it's time to find the dog a new home.
Obviously these solutions require a friendly conversation with the person, so the more helpful you come across, the better...
Try not to get angry at the dog, usually these things are more the fault of the humans involved than anything else.

I left out that I have a neighbor on the other side of me whose dog barks too. I had a friendly chat with her asking she keep the doggie inside at night because I had to get up at 4 a.m. She refused. I started calling the cops and animal control and we stopped speaking. Even worse she tried to punish me by playing very loud music into my bedroom at all hours of the night and morning. We retaliated by getting one of those boom boxes and putting the speakers right against the wall (we live in connected townhomes) and blasted her back very early in the morning. She still leaves the dog out but he seems to have calmed down some. Now the other dog I started the post about is two houses down, has a deep loud bark and only starts barking at sunset; he goes on until about 10:00 or 11:00. I think its because children are playing across the street but he's quiet all day - not a sound, just when the sun sets, he starts. Both are sweet dogs, but their owners are truly mean. I won't talk to them because they are questionable and I don't want them to know its me calling. Animal control says they keep it confidential.
Oh well, bad karma.

I have a crazed Cujo-like dog living on the corner behind me. Their deck is very close to my bedroom, and they leave the dog out all the time, just tied up. I feel bad for the dog, but he wakes me up in the middle of the night, he barks all day, he scares the gardeners. It's not a good situation. :(
