Any Gene Kelly fans out there ?
Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 11:59 PM by CarolinaPeridot
Tell me I am not the only Gene Kelly fan ? I am 24 years old , I discovered him when I was a little girl ( around 4 ) while watching old musicals with my Great-Grandmother . I can watch him dance all day ! I get lost in the screen whenever he dances .

I just spent the entire night in la-la land watching the Turner Classic Movies channel . They are playing " That's Entertainment !" Parts I , II and III throughout the evening with footage from the MGM era of musicals . Gene Kelly , Fred Astaire , Ginger Rogers , Cyd Charisse , Ann Miller , Debbie Reynolds , and Esther Williams - they don't make performers like these anymore . I needed an escape from politics for a night and this has been perfect . The entire month of October , Turner Classic Movies will be showing classic musicals . Check it out if you are a fan of this genre .

1. I saw Singing in the Rain and liked it
Not a fan really but lemme tell you something about Kelly, he and my paternal grandfather both went to UPitt and were in the same frat, don't know if they knew each other but still very cool.

4. You bet
I'm watching TCM tonight too and enjoying all the "That's Entertainment" films. I'm also a huge Astaire fan and seeing them at their elderly ages, 77 and 64 still hoofing brilliantly in That's Entertainment II was great.

I think "Singin' in the Rain" is the best musical ever made. I also love Gene in "An American in Paris", "Take Me out to the Ballgame", "On the Town", and "Anchors Away". I think Fred is wonderful in many films too "Easter Parade", "Holiday Inn", "The Band Wagon"--so many.

I love musicals--what can I say?

8. You are my new best friend ! LOL
Yes I saw " That's Entertainment " II with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly dancing at the ages of 77 and 64 - they still had it !( if alive I bet they would still have it ! ) They are both icons of dance in my book . Kelly is big influence of mine as far as my life as a performance artist is concerned .

I am staying up all night to watch " That's Dancing " which comes on at 3 am EST on TCM ( Turner Class Movies ) . I first saw this when I was 4 years old as well and I thought ( still think today that its -> ) it was AMAZING !

5. What was the clip in TE 3
with the guy hopping for the entire number...down the street, through people's yards, etc. Continuous hopping. Looked to be a film from the 50's. I didn't recognize who the dancer was.

9. "An American In Paris"
Mr. Nownow and I had never seen the whole thing, so one time when we were out of town and had been tramping around some city or other all day, we relaxed in the hotel room with a glass of wine and turned on one of the cable channels, possibly TCM or AMC, and caught the very beginning of this. What a beautiful movie -- and yeah, you just sort of caught yourself waiting for Gene Kelly to dance!

Maybe I'll have the Mr. look for a copy of it on DVD -- watching Oscar Levant play the piano is quite the experience, too.

13. Who doesn't like Gene Kelly?
Kelly and his famous movies stand the test of time.

Kelly merged the film model of the Silent American Male (John Wayne type) and a guy who could actually do art. That was and still stands as a statement.

19. I'm watching too
It has been just great. And check the lineup for movies the rest of the week -- just great both day and night. At least it will take my mind off the Republicans for a few hours.

AND....Thursday evening Senator John Edwards will be hosting the TCM showing of Dr. Strangelove. Isn't that cool?

22. I love Turner Classic Movies
I watched 'It Happened One Night' the other day for a respite from campaign coverage. Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert trading clever quips....wonderful. I agree, they don't make stars like they used to. I have always loved Gene Kelly too.

24. they don't write dialouge like that anymore
that witty light romantic comedy dialouge from films like "It Happened One Night" or "The Awful Truth" or "Philadelphia Story"--yep thank goodness for TCM. Though there are exceptions--I loved "Four Weddings and a Funeral" for example (even with all the F*** uttered in it--it still had a certain style).

27. His "newspaper dance" from Summer Stock was pure genius...
Kelly merged forms of tap and jazz with a signature strength.

One of a kind. :toast:
