I'm watching the Daily show from last night and it has the Dr Phil segment on it. Has That guy lost it? (Dr. Phil that is). It's about that town in Texas he was going to save. That is just too far out for me. The guys talking trash about Phil in the bar was hilarious though. Does anyone here like Dr. Phil? And what was that thing about "An epidemic of blowjobs in middle school" when he was talk to bush?

I saw that. Bush's face was contorted even worse than it was in the debate.
The mayor of the town was really funny too - when the guy was hugging her.

Most of what he said was serious and thoughtful, almost out of place on a show full of smart asses. After Jon heaped all kinds of praise on him he said "you see this skin color, it is good, you can't see me blushing". WOW!

Tutu was AWESOME last night! He played nicely with Jon, took the jabs, and poked back with a few zingers himself!
The best part was at the beginning when he said that Tutu was his second Nobel Peace Prize winner guest, and said that unlike his previous winner (Kissinger), Tutu actually DESERVED it!

4. There is no nice way to say it |
|
...I think he is one of the biggest assholes to walk the planet. His ego is on steroids. Those clips of him with weecowboy and Laura, and him with his Stepford Wife working on the Nancy Gaze, were CREEPY.
Yes, he WAS talking to weewee about BJs. The focus of his discussion was the difficulty in rearing children in this day and age, where BJs are a factor in the middle schools. I found Jon Stewart's remark (about how they aren't an epidemic, they're a GODSEND!) amusing, in a perverse way.
But I must say, that whole segment gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling about inhabitants of small Texas towns, one that I never felt before. When those angry townspeople vented their opinions of Dr. Phil, I thought, gee, there IS a great deal of innate intelligence in the common man!!

I've always known this man was a charlatan. What amazed me in the clip, was that these people never questioned him or his comments about them. They sat there and let him abuse and demean them.

His people must screen the "guests" to find ones that are vulnerable and lack any self-worth. I have just seen clips of him and he sounds like an ass to me., It's hard to believe that so many people think this guy is something more than some hack who is bilking so many people out of their money and their self esteem.

I've been known to put on my self righteous better than thou attitude and berate idiots too (and thats what these people have to be if they are so desperate to go on TV and have their dirty laundry judged by him) while millions of viewers watch.
My problem is I haven't been able to fool any rich self loathing talk show host into being my benefactor. I guess I'll just have to continue pulling my act out and performing it for free when idiots ask for it.

That he's managed to package pious sanctimony as "straight talk" and that he presumes to diagnose and advise after a single 10-minute (televised!) session with a stranger ought to cause a revocation of his medical license.

I find him to be incredibly pretentious and not too bright, all at the same time. My mother worships him and hangs on his every word. It's irritating to be having a conversation with her and have her interject, "Well, Dr Phil thinks..." as if they were having a conversation about it over drinks the day before.

There cannot possibly be any healing value in bringing your 14 year old on national television to discuss her dating habits or how she gets along with her stepmother or whatever.
Dr. Phil is just the latest in what I refer to as voyeur tv - for some reason, many people are thrilled to appear on tv, even if its in the worst possible light. And many people are thrilled to see them there, peering in at their personal lives. I find it really gross.

It's the same concept, though. It's like driving by a car accident: you know it's not right to look at the carnage, but you can't help but sneak a peek or two while you go past.

I actually like Dr Phil. I think most people who go on need a kick in the ass and know it. I find his advice very practical and intelligent in almost all cases. They screen their audiences to make sure they don't have anyone with serious psychological problems, so they don't exploit really sick people or damage the work they might be doing with another psychologist or psychiatrist.
Dr Phil has been in practice for 20 years and it is only because Oprah was so impressed with the help that he gave her, that he has become this media person.

I like Dr. Phil too. Aside from all of his corn-pone Texas sayings, he does dispense no-nonsense, ass-kicking advice. And it's usually fairly obvious, but quite often the people who are in the middle of a problem are unable to see even the obvious answers.
I have no problems with the guy - he is what he is. Anyone who thinks he should be giving full-service psychoanalysis on a one-hour TV show is being unrealistic. I also think he's an egotistical ass, but that doesn't discredit what he does on his show.

He is what he is. Doesn't go the whole "gawk show" route (Springer et al). He ought to be commended for that.
