He was raised by a priest and was a VERY devout Catholic. He denied any direct references but acknowledged that he wanted to impart Catholic morallity in a way that wouldn't be rejected. He argued with CS Lewis about the overt symbolism in the Narnia books

12. I have faith in Jesus.
Especially as far as this fight is concerned. He died once and came back and I keep hearing people say "he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead" Clearly he is not to be messed around with
