is the slim cat phenomenon propagated by narrow minded feline media figures?

8. No offense, but that is animal abuse....
Its like seeing nine year old kids that weigh 300 pounds. Imagine the problems this is going to develop in the cat's later life. I prefer my kitties to live a LONG HEALTHY life and not be subjected to human thoughts on cuteness and suffer for it. I have yet to have a cat with any major medical problems, not diabetes, nor anything else, because we watch what they eat, and let them excercise. I have two cats that are over 15 years old and they still run around like kittens, and except for Kitkat being hit by a car when she snuck out of the house once, they have had no medical problems(She was only hit in the head, she was OK, she's a hard headed cat! :)).

Unless your cat has a gland problem or something else that causes them to retain that much weight, then there is NO excuse for this. I could only imagine how difficult it is for him to walk, much less run, like a normal cat. Put him on a diet, NOW, before he developes medical problems.

9. I tried so hard with Mr Big
i got him as a fat adult...about 25 lbs-he was a rescue kitty. I could never get the weight off. It's amazing how many people thought it was 'cute' to feed the fat kitty that wasn't theirs! He was so uncomfortable and unable to clean-erm-down there.

I could only get Biggy to 17-18 lbs and he checked out at 13-10 years with me. My vet said that was OLD for a diabetic kitty. How did he die? His lymphatic system disintegrated-a rare occurrence in diabetics but much faster than kidney failure or vascular problems

Now Sammy, my avatar kitty went for 18 years as a skinny gal...but I loved them both.

10. I'm sorry for your loss...
I'm glad you tried to control his weight, its just that when people start feeding cats all sorts of crap and their weight gets out of control, it is inexcusable. I prefer long lived, healthy and happy cats, that are basically as nature made them. Our shortest lived cat, Dino, he died suddenly from what was termed a "Mystery Disease" back in the early 90's. In reality, I believe he aquired FIV and died from complications due to AIDS. It was so sad, he lived too be only 13 and the vets didn't know what was wrong when we took him there. He suffered so much and so suddenly, we didn't even have time to relieve him from suffering. But to see Boo, I find it sad that someone would take such poor care of a cat.

Our entire extended family loves animals, and are stong believers in keeping them as happy and healthy as possible. For example, I have no doubt that our two oldest kitties will push past 20, they have yet to slow down now. Our other 3 cats are young and terrorise the older two, but they also keep them active, that is the most important thing. Hell my grandmother was able to keep Mork, a beagle, to live past 20 years old, considering that the average life expectancy for beagles is somewhere around 11 years, that's pretty good. She also has a Himilayan cat who is pushing 20, I think she is 19 now, and she runs around like a kitten half the time and sleeps the other half :). It is SUCH a pain to watch her sometimes, and Mindy, her 3 year old yellow lab as well.

Animals can bring such joy to our lives, that when you are put in a position of responsibility, I believe it is our duty to keep them healthy and happy for the rest of their lives.

Sammy died in 86, Big in 96, and I still think of them every day. People in the neighbourhood STILL know me as 'Mr Big's Mom' He was quite gregarious

11. I've seen some very big thick cats that look fat...
...but are in fact just thick. And the biggest one I've ever seen was wild...and I think part domestic part Bobcat.

16. you should see how fat Streak is getting
all she does is eat, play, and pick on Male.

She's faster than Male, and I catch her tagging Male all the time.

15. Our one year olds are slim and running around like kittens.
Our previous two cats were slim until about 15 years old. One of them just got so fat over the course of a year. Her fur was matted and she looked awful. On her own, she lost the weight and lived to be 18. Her sister died skinny at 16. They had access to the same food so I can't explain what made one of them so fat.
