I respect Rodney Dangerfield |
|
I am a long-time aficionado of comedy. I spent my childhood watching old movies by the Marx Brothers, WC Fields, Mae West, Cary Grant (who WAS a great comedian!), Laurel and Hardy, the Bowery Boys, The Little Rascals, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton... I have a special place in my heart for comics.
Rodney Dangerfield was among the very best. I saw him in concert once, in 1983, and to this day, I have never laughed so hard. He was a machine-gun comic: the jokes came so fast and so hard that there's no recovery. I couldn't even REMEMBER any of his jokes, I was too busy laughing.
He was a paint salesman on Long Island (in the town next to the one I grew up in) when, in middle age, he decided to become a comic. He became one of the very best.
Goodbye Rodney. I will miss you - I hoped you had one more tour or movie in you.

5. Brilliant set-ups and persona--excellent delivery |
|
And really well-written stuff. Not a three minute written-to-not-feel-scripted monologue about personal crap with a punchline attached, just joke-joke-joke, and all expertly crafted.

Rodney was a classic. He had a great life and made hundreds of millions of people laugh. I know that he's given me many thousands of chuckles just with Caddyshack!
RIP Rodney

I loved his stand-up but the performance that really amazed me was in Natural Born Killers. God, was he good. And creepy.
Rest in peace, Mr. Dangerfield.
