And why are they so damned expensive?

Want some thing light enough to haul around in a pheasant field and balanced nicely so I don't continue to humiliate myself at the trap shoots.

1. A browning...
Buy a Browning Citori

http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?value=008B&cat_id=013&type_id=085

It's an awesome gun, will be in your family for generations and will never let you down as long as you take good care of it. When it comes to shotguns, I always advcoate Browning.

2. Agreed-Browning Citori
But why not opt for a 20 gauge? Much lighter with not much reduction in stopping power.

3. Third recommendation for a Browning...

but I'd also look at the new Browning Cynergy Field as well as the Citori 525 Field. It's an impressive new design. Same price range. I want one. :)

Edited to add a picture:

4. Yeah, I was leaning toward a Browning too, actually. No more expensive
than the other brands and they've got the good rep.

Nice photo, thanks.

Still can't figure why a Remington 87-11 gas powered is like half the price though, heh.

6. Not to hi-jack a thread...
But are you a Mosin-Nagant collector?

5. Depends
Best are made by H&H extremely expensive, but very good. 3 - 15k

Browning makes very nice over and unders that are much cheaper (<1k) but still well made. Not sure about Remington's break guns.

I have used both and still prefer a Remington 870, pump.

Good luck.

11. Yeah, you can't beat a Holland & Holland.

Well, except maybe for a gun from Purdey & Sons. Custom-fit to your shoulder and reach, points without even thinking about it...too bad they're so damned expensive.

9. Don't hunt pheasants with an over/under
It sucks when you find a large bouquet and you've got only two shots. Get a 20-gauge pump or semi-auto with a magazine large enough for 4 or 5 rounds. It's a lot more fun that way.

JMO, based on 30 years experience hunting pheasants. Have fun!

10. Heh, I hunt 'em out here in Kansas and when they flush they go
straight up and fly about a mile. In Indiana, we used to watch where they'd land (if we couldn't get a shot off) and try to kick them up again, but not out here.

Besides, if I got two birds with two shots from a single flush, it'd be my best day hunting for quite awhile! One bird with two shots is more like it, heh.

13. Where in Kansas do you hunt?
I do most of mine around Kingman or Cheney, with a trip to Marion every once in a while. Years ago I found zillions of pheasants around Russell but I haven't been up there in a while.

But yeah, you're right -- once they flush you're not gonna find 'em again any time soon.

12. Over/Under
1)If you're looking at a strict budget, look at Lanber. They are affordable and quality built.
2)If you're looking to drop $1K or more, Browning is the way to go.

14. Orange hat family
This is the last place I would have ever looked for a hunting connection.....but it has been our house topic for the past several days.

DH wants to start hunting with the teens. Actually they hunted last year gun-less. So we have been talking guns and I am trying to get in the loop.

It seems the 870 is very affordable and a good all around gun. I then started to read up on the Benelli. Oh My!!

I say "What the heck - get the best gun this round...Because it will be the first and the last gun you ever buy."

I will try the pretty carved ones when I shop. Go and make friend with a gunsmith - not walmart.

Please don't track mountain lion scat into the house!
