I'm having oral surgery tomorrow. Help!!

16. Not that bad really

Years ago, I had a watertight door slam me in the face while I was crossing Drake Passage enroute Antarctica. There was only so much that the ship's PA could do under the circumstances. Seriously screwed up my teeth, and about a decade later, I started to get agonizing toothaches every few months that would last a couple of weeks and then subside. Also, I really didn't take care of them much after the accident so they got much worse.

Anyway, to get to the point, I recently had all of my teeth pulled out (1 visit for the uppers and 2 for the lowers - maybe 2-1/2 hours total work. I was uncomfortable, but not particularly painful.

I had scaling done yesterday. Half of my mouth and I have to go back for the other half. Get the NO (laughing gas) if you can. It really helps. I didn't feel a thing pain wise, although I kept gagging until they changed the angle of the chair. The recovery isn't going so well with me, but I've been told that usually it isn't bad. My gums weren't in really bad shape, but they're sensitive. The procedure itself wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

21. What does scaling involve?

I'm having gum grafting on part of my mouth. They're taking tissue from the roof of my mouth and moving it to the gumline. I'm mostly worried about the recovery and how long the healing will take.

I had several oral surgeries last year. Bring a CD player or i-pod. I have some meditation CDs that I play. It really helps. The ones I like are called Brainwave Music.

*edit* Also, buy the Haagen Daaz before you leave for the dentist. This way you know you have a treat waiting when you get home.

when I went a few weeks ago to get my wisdom teeth out I wished I had brought mine. They ended up not being able to put me under, so I was awake. Wish I had had something to drown out the drill!

I'm recovering from yesterday's dentist visit today. The procedure itself will probably be pretty easy as they'll knock you right out. Just take good care of yourself afterwords.

About all I can suggest is to take slow deep breaths. If you get the gas, the breaths are even better.

If they offer tranqs, take them. That's how I got thru my oral surgery. I got to have my gum cut open to remove an extra tooth under my canine. Living through chemistry is so much fun. It makes you kinda loopy, in a good way.

"Codeine makes me sick". Don't ask for Demerol.

That gets you Demerol instead of hydrocodone. Demerol is good, very good.

If you can't sleep get them to perscribe you a sleep aid for a few days.

It wasn't bad for me but terrible for my wife(wisdom teeth). Good luck.
