Any sociology grad students out there? |
|
How's student life? What are you working on? Are you happy? Making a difference? Does your department deal with primarily cultural topics or is there also a component of what used to be called political economy? Does the department get good funding or are you all in fear of being merged into anthropology, psychology or *-American studies?
I did polisci as an undergrad and was surprised to find courses on Marxist thought taught in the sociology department. Frankly, I was disgusted with the stubbornly mainstream polisci faculty and the field's pathetic attempts at gaining "scientific" recognition by promoting narrowly useful tools like game theory to be the intellectual focus of the discipline.
I'm thinking of applying to a few sociology programs this fall and want to get an idea of whether it's a sensible path. I most emphatically do not want to drive a cab or go back to doing what I'm doing now after getting a PhD. Low income is fine, as long as the work's in the field, preferably teaching.
