Antique Road Show: American or British?
I like the British version. I'm amazed at the non plussed reactions of our UK friends across the big pond. A typical appraisal, "this item is from the 14th century Henry the 1st reign, it's worth 80,000 lbs, reaction, "yes, yes what, what, right, right". American style, "What you have hear is an early American cross stitch sampler circa 1800 worth today approximately $75,000," SAY WHAT! I was gonna throw this in the trash when I was cleaning out the garage". I really love all the art purchases at yard sales for $3.00 that turn out to be worth conservative estimates of $40,000. I guess my favorite moment, American, the man that brought in the Indian blanket that had been laying on the back of his easy chair, "worth $500,000 on a bad day at any the auction", he cried. My favorite British appraisal, dusty medals and letters belonging to the daughter whose father was on the Carpathia administering to the Titanic survivors, estimated value 300,000 lbs. I'm still searching my attic on a regular basis and scouring local tag sales, you never know.

1. LOL!
I totally agree! (By the way, the abbreviation for the British monetary unit isn't 'lbs.' That's reserved for weight. It's '£' or just simply 'pounds.')

3. I love both ARs
They're just FAB! And I've learned so much from the appraisers about what to look for: tips of the trade indeed!

The British version is fun because the stuff is so much older. This one guy I remember had a silver serving spoon that turned out to be from the 1600s! And I learn so much more about china and pottery from them, for example what's 12C China, and what's the 19C Japanese repro. And the British are never so crass as to suggest auction value, only what you should insure it for.

The Americans are fun just because of the wide variety of stuff that's here: immigrants' belongings, native american/indiginous artifacts, sentimental/pop culture stuff that we all just love b/c it's part of our collective conscience. They also give a big boost to our home-grown arts and crafts (Rookwood pottery and the like).

BTW, I have a special fondness for Lee and Leslie Keno.

9. Have you read Hidden Treasures?
The Keno bros wrote it a few years back, all about the different pieces of furniture they've sold. Great book.

7. why isn't there...
....a collectibles network?????

I would watch it most of the time. And with the collectibles and antiques craze in this country, it would surely generate as much interest and advertising as other niche networks.

They could do regular shows on dolls, toys, furniture, postcards & paper, and so MANY OTHER areas of collecting.

Wouldn't you like such a thing?

8. Maybe
but there's already a plethora of these shows on HGTV, TLC, etc. -- basically all the PBS clones on cable.

10. not really
There are half a dozen. Antique roadshow, UK & US. Collector Inspector. The Kovels. All of those on PBS. What else? I know of no other show on collectibles and antiques.

15. That's the one
Looks like a duffer to me. :eyes:

The thing that really annoys me about Bargain Hunt is the so called experts who never, ever disagree with David Dickens the perma-tan man.

11. Errrr..........pounds vs pounds, my friend...
Edited on Thu Sep-11-03 01:11 AM by Pert_UK
lb is an abbreviation for "pound", but only when used to express weight, as in "Pounds and ounces" / there are 2.2lbs in 1kg.

You'll be wanted to either write "pounds", use "GBP" or use the pound symbol, ₤.

Sorry.

16. just use
£ alt 0 1 6 3

Hold down the alt button, hit 0 1 6 3 in sequence, let up the alt button, and the £ should magically appear.
