Okay, New Age Music fans: tell me some good albums
I tend to lean away from the "elevator-esque" John Tesh type of New Age and really get into tribal-ambient (Deep Forest, Douglas Spotted Eagle, Dead Can Dance) Ethnic-ambient (Vas), or stuff with an interesting beat/sound (Enigma, Adiemus). Like Celtic a lot, like Moya Brennan, Enya, or Loreena McKennitt, but I don't like it all. So anyway, just seeing whether anyone out there might be able to point me in the direction of something really kewl that I don't know about but might be interested in...

1. There was an interesting lady
who opened for Peter Gabriel this last tour named Sevara Nazarkhan. She's from one of the "stans" in Russia. I forget which. I think she's originally from around Tashkent. She and her band were WONDERFUL life.

The album is not as good as the band live, but it's a really interesting cross of Asian sounds. I enjoy it when I'm feeling adventurous.

Also, I like a guy called Jai Uttal. He does what could only be called "Indian dance." I heard it on our NPR affiliate about 7 years ago and picked up a copy.

I'm also really fond of Alex DeGrassi. I tend to prefer guitar over other intruments. His acoustic and semi-acoustic stuff is really beautiful.

2. Whoah.
There are new age fans?

Electronic ambient I can handle.

Try the Afro-Celt Sound System. Good stuff.

4. Peter Maunu, "Warm Sound In A Greay Field"
It's stretching it to call Maunu "New Age." Windham Hill, he's not. He's been called "ambient," he's done rock and straight-ahead jazz. All I know is that "My Sky At Twilight" from this album is one of the most beautifully performed electric guitar pieces you'll ever hear, REGARDLESS of the genre. The album is on the Narada label, and they do a lot of "samplers" a la Windham Hill.

1). He was the guitarist in the Arsenio Hall Show band.

2). Patrick O'Hearn and Mark Isham play on the album. Maunu is the guitarist filling the "John McLaughlin" shoes on Isham's kick-ass Miles Davis fusion-era tribute, "Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project."

5. Ishq
it's tribal in some spots, ambient in others. They have one cd, Orchid, that I really enjoy. Here is their website.
