Here are my theories on what would happen.

I suspect that the first thing Bush would do in office would be to push through a more severe version of the Patriot Act. Public communication is banned from criticizing the president or the government. Any person applying for a government-paid job is screened for past affiliation with protest groups and critical statements. ISP companies are oblieged to store all information about the internet usage of their customers indefinitely, and surrender it to the government upon demand. It becomes legal policy to install a key-logger on the machines of any person known to have criticized the government.

The next would be an Iron Curtain. For reason of protection from terrorism, all travel to and from the US is banned for people of all nationalities (US citizens who fail to return to the US within a week of the passing of this Act lose their citizenship). In order to increase security, all inhabitants of the US are required to obtain permission from their state government to travel more than 100 kilometers from their residence. All non-citizens are required to register with the police department once a week.

After that, the US would renounce its seat in the UN, in order to "allow our military more freedom in protecting US security without foreign interference".

Then, they impose a tax on all nations of the world in order to help support the War on Terror. Failure to pay this tribute results in trade sanctions, embargos or, in severe cases, pacification, the overthrow of the rogue government and occupation until a legitimate government is established by the US.

Next, they declare themselves world sovereign protectors, and wage war on those rogue nations who still oppose 'freedom'.

He's extremely apolitical and has no interest in even talking about * or Kerry. Too funny.

Hey, our dedication may be taking a bit of a toll on certain things right now, but just remind them that we're doing this for all Americans including them! We love our country, and we're willing to act on the feeling that we're headed in the wrong direction. To me that's a worthy cause! Your husband should be proud! And he will probably realize that once he gets you back full time. :-)

I usually am online, the news is on, and sometimes AAR too and I mute them on and off for a few hours in the morning. I can see why I drive my husband nuts.

I told him today I was going to leave for a week this saturday to do a swing state trip and he said I almost wish you were gone until the election. Then he said he didn't mean it. He just hates hearing about it all. Upsets him. He hates Bush too but not in the same way.

14. I'm obsessed as well

My twelve year old has already stated that she "so hopes Kerry wins 'cause she won't be able to stand another 4 years of me talking about how awful Bush is". She is a pretty witty kid and knows much more about politics then alot of her friends her age which I guess is a good thing. The other day while her was putting on her shoes to go on a bike ride with her friend, one of the news channels was on and her friend asked the question "exactly what does the "W" in George Bush's name stand for?" Without a hesitation my daughter says "while according to John Kerry it stands for WRONG" I was in the kithen when I overheard this and couldn't help but laugh!!! I am so raising a democratic kid.

they are in their 20's both married and we are friends. They say they just want me to be happy. I don't talk politics as much with them as I do at home. Don't want to scare them away!! They are voting for Kerry and thats all I care about.

16. My kids are fairly sick of me.

They are all active Democrats, but they think I am obsessed. They often try to change the subject.

The first time I met my oldest daughter's partner's mom, we started talking politics within seconds. The girls have always said we were very much alike.

My youngest daughter is almost as obsessed as me, so she can't tell me to shut up nearly as often as the others.

I am lucky that my husband is politically obsessed, too.

We have never been like this before. But then, there has never been a situation or a president as bad as *.

The last time I was this addicted to politics was Watergate. I hope we have an outcome that is much the same, except for putting the crook in office for a second term.

I was in high school and my dad had the tv on all day with it. We watched it for hours. Then I voted for first time for Carter. Since then didn't get involved until now. It just feels like our country will fall apart with 4 more years of this. It scares me how easy he goes to war, what country is next?

...when I start ranting and raving about Bush. I try to read her something from the paper or the internet about the election and she just doesn't want to hear it. I know her heart is in the right place, but politics is just not an enjoyable subject for her.

And I think that if people like us have a loved one who is not such a fanatic, we have an obligation to respect their sensibilities. I enjoy DU very much. And I enjoy the political chat board that I've run every since 1997. I would really hate to give either of them up.

But if they started to become a real wedge between me and my wife, I'd give them up instantly and permanantly.

You have to have priorities, and your family has to be at the very top. It's just a matter of self-control and respect.

I think I am obsessed even more than normal because we moved in june and he said I could volunteer for campaign instead of getting job and now that its what I do and talk about 24/7 its getting old.

Same as you two! She wouldn't vote R, and she's liberal, but she's just not as intense about it as i am. She simply suffers fools a lot better than i do. I can't stand that we have dumbasses who figured out the political system just enough to get into power and then start breaking the law to stay there.

She's annoyed by it, but i wouldn't say she hates it. I do! I want them all in jail. She just wants better people in office.

Why do so many people see their duty to be informed participants in the functioning of their own country as an embarrassment?

Some people are more sensitive than others, but there is a bottom line that everyone recognizes: "It's" really bad.

There is no longer any excuse for any citizen to say "It's just politics" in order to obfuscate their obligation.

This country is at a 'where the rubber meets the road' crossroads.

The decision is about who cares enough to actually vote.

27. How about a girlfriend?

My girlfriend has two small kids and no time for politics. That I can understand. So, while she is generally open minded about things, she is also uninformed, and not too interested in all the shouting. It also seems that her family members are all staunch conservative republicans. So politics is not something that we do very often.

But this can work! The best relationship in my family is between my aunt and uncle, she's a conservative, born again republican (though one who really does have a heart), and he's a liberal democrat (from Massachusetts, no less). They've been married for almost 20 years now, but they don't talk politics.

He has learned to only put things near me that won't hurt him or the TV. 30. Politics was one of the few things we agreed on.

I'm at the beginning stages of a divorce of a 13 year marriage. If only our political agreement could translate into other things, but unfortunately that didn't translate into better communication and emotional compatibility in a number of areas.
My point: nothing's perfect and when you love someone, you respect their opinions on both sides. In no relationship will you agree on everything all the time, so being open, honest, and respectful can go far in how one deals with it.

That being said, I still doubt I'd probably pick a conservative next time either.

But since bush stole office, I've been able to devote my time to getting that crackpot GONE... so let's hope it works. It did indeed partially factor into one relationship going down the tubes, but he has since conceded I was right about these crooks all along.

36. I sympathize, marlakay.

Mr. Nownow spent the first two years with his head in the sand over how bad this administration was, giving me the stinkeye every time I brought it up.

But then he read something, somewhere, about how Ashcroft was going to require libraries and bookstores to give him receipts and that our records at the doctor's office were no longer private. I think having to sign a release at either the doctor's office or our dentist finally pushed him over the edge. I sent him the link to Atrios's blog (Eschaton), and he's been just as hooked as I have ever since.

But the first couple of years were tough, because I just couldn't seem to get through to him that beina Pollyanna about it wasn't going to make the stuff that upset me about them go away. He generally wants to believe the best about people and situations, and he has a Republican friend he corresponds with, mostly by e-mail, who was spinning like a ballet dancer that whole time, trying to convince him this was just an ordinary Republican administration.

It was a little surprising to see when it broke over -- I think the fact he was playing ostrich was the reason I started participating at DU, though I'd signed up and lurked for a long time and not posted much. Now, he's just as pissed off about most of it as I am, and he spends as much time on it as I do, though not on DU -- he says all he needs is on more compulsion! I guess I can kinda' see that.
