Misspelled library art do-over a no go says artist - sfgate
What do you all think of the artist's position?

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/10/08/state1245EDT0047.DTL

In my opinion, she's being incredibly childish and unprofessional, and deserves to be shunned for future projects by any quality-conscious client. Her resentment about the "hate mail" should be reserved for the individual morans who sent the mail, not the municipality who hired her for 40k to create a piece of commercial art for them. I'd like to suggest she go back to art school where she can pay others to put up with her tantrums, instead of the other way around.

2. For a Brochure, A Proofreader Should Have Been Hired
but for a mural, I understand why no one would think to hire one.

If I were the artist, I would be mortified and volunteer to make the corrections for free.

3. "The art chose the words," and other things that make me want to slap her.

Does she have any idea how fucking pretentious and stupid that makes her sound? She's representative of the minorty of the art community, but she feeds the stereotype of artists as lazy, incompetant, self-centered pricks.

How do yo mis-spell Einstein? Shakespeare I can understand, phonetically it still works without the extra A. But EINSTEIN? "Eistein" is not even close. She either didn't know who they hell they were (and if you don't know who Einstein was, it's time to throw yourself into oncoming traffic for the good of the gene pool), was too stupid/lazy/wasted to spell them correctly, or else just didn't give a shit.

This is not an artist that takes pride in her work. This is a self-centered bitch. If she took pride in her work, she would go back and fix the mistakes she made no matter what was said to her because she cares about the mural as a piece of art and as a representation of her own body of work.

Not to mention that she was PAID to create the mural. I don't make 40K in a year. If I might put on my critic's hat for a moment. . . that's a pretty slack-ass mural. ;) I could have done that shit over a holiday weekend.

8. She should fix it..

It is commercial work, it belongs to the client...unless of course they signed a contract with her saying otherwise..
From the looks of that tile work.. they were prefabricated.. made by hand and fired...
plenty of time to check the spelling of "Shakespeare" before it goes in front of a library.

She can do what she wants with her own work--
I let my art make decisions too
and when the client doesn't like it-- I fix it..

Suck it up Sweetie..

9. ELEVEN mispellings? And they accepted delivery???
Edited on Fri Oct-08-04 02:41 PM by rocknation
...(The artist) previously...(said) that she would fix the 11 misspellings. She asked for $6,000 plus travel expenses to correct the work they paid her $40,000 to create. The city council, faced with the embarrassing prospect of leaving the typo-strewn work in front of its spanking new library, voted 3-2 to approve the expenditure.

There was agreement that the library would pay her in exchange for the work, so they have the right to have the work done correctly. The corrections should be made at HER expense--she is entitled to no more than the REIMBURSEMENT of her travel expenses. If she continues to refuse, the library should sue her for a refund and spend the $6K on finding someone else to fix the work.

As someone who writes for VERY little pay (and actually gives a damn about the results), I am highly offended. It's "creative types" like her who take the food out of our mouths!
