Sheep Slaughtered In Front Of Students For H.S. Class
CLACKAMAS, Ore. -- Students in an Oregon high school's introductory animal science class had a choice last month: make apple cider or watch the slaughter of sheep.

Freshman Krista Brandtner wishes she had made the drink.

Brandtner and her classmates at Clackamas High School watched a contract slaughterer slit the throat and break the neck of several sheep.

Brandtner was horrified, especially by the cracking sound of the neck. She says whenever she thinks about it, she only hears the awful noise.

Instructors had warned Brandtner and her classmates that the slaughter could be gruesome, but it was part of the livestock process.

1. Holy crap!!!
I could care less if it's part of the "livestock process". Take your class on a field trip to a farm or something instead of doing it yourself!

:wow:

7. I volunteered at a farm for Heifer Project Intl.
It's a charity that promotes sustainable agriculture amoung the world's rural poor.

They have a farm in central Mass, that is mainly educational in nature. It was fun to volunteer there, and I made friends with a lot of wonderful interns from Africa, Europe, Asia, S. America.

err, anyway. One day a newborn lamb was injured. It seems it wandered into the pig-pen and got rough-housed by the piglets. I discovered the poor thing walking around with a severely broken lower-jaw. (it was just hanging straight down). It never would have been able to nurse .

The farm steward was not around, and the full-time intern was no help. I had to make the descision to put the animal down. There was no vet around, so I had to break it's neck. I used a wood-chopping maul. I still feel like shit about it, although everyone assured me I did the right thing.
