"kerry insulted the audience-the latest asinine rightwing lie
look for this to be hannity and rush's big line next week-they'll probably find the one guy in the audience who makes over 200,000 and have him on - even though kerry didn't say no one in the room makes over $2000,000-he said that they weren't in the upper percentile

mark my words-this will be their big repetion for next week-prepare for it

Nice K...insult the crowd..."You don't look rich like me"

Kerry is a condescending freak about "only three people here will have to pay higher taxes"

On another matter - I for one thought W won the first debate - so there!

LOL.. none of you are in ''my class''... sorry, lemmings!

Did Kerry just insult the audience by telling them that they do not look like they make $200,000 a year?

The man is SO out of touch.

I would be insulted to have some pretty rich boy look at me and assume that I don't make 200k in a year. What a jerk.

Because I knew the rightwingers would run with it.

3. Does anyone have Kerry's exact quote?
I don't remember hearing it like that. CNN's transcript is only Part 1 right now so I can't go back.

Here is the quote:

"And looking around here at this group here, I suspect there are only three people here who are going to be affected: the president, me, and Charlie -- I'm sorry -- you, too. (Laughter.)"

He "suspects" there are only 3!

24. There's more depth there than it sounds like
What Kerry is actually saying is: the only people that make that kind of money in a year are likely very famous and well-known.

4. I'd have to agree
Kerry should not have said that. It made my stomach quiver when he did.

It was a barrier for him connecting to the audience.

10. I didn't see it that way at all. I saw it as a recognition of his wealth
but also a recongition that not everyone is as fortunate as he. And, I was not a Kerry supporter from the start, so I don't hang on every word he says. I saw it as him being very honest with the people- No one in that room looked at him and said, "yeah, I make over $100,000 a year - what are you going to do for me?"

I liked what he said and I thought it connected him rather than disconnected him. He's not going to gain any points by trying to pretend he's one of us - Bush tries that all the time and we call him on it every time he does.

17. He was making the assumption that everyone in the room was not
as fortunate as he.

He could have handled it better. Thats all.

20. Nah - I thought he did great - no one in the room was as fortunate as
he or Bush or Charlie and he knew that. Again, I'm not hanging on every word the man says as gospel and I thought he was fine. We're getting too critical in our critiques of the man. Ha ha. Besides, next to screechy, he was great! I thought overall he was very personable.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but I think you are being a bit harsh in this instance.

8. 200,000 is a lot of money. Probably only a handful on DU even near that
It was completely appopriate for Kerry to say this because quite fankly, most everyone in that room would die to make that much money, and be envious of any who did.

18. Professional married couples?
Consultants, lawyers, small business owners, doctors, etc.

If he were talking a million bucks, ok. But $200,000 is probably fairly common.

It was risky, and it could have been handled better. Thats all. I cannot hide the fact that it made me uncomfortable when he said it.

Other than that, good job Kerry.

9. Look beyond the silly remark -- Kerry's point was
Do we think it's fair only three of us benefit from *'s tax break on those making over 200K? Kerry certainly didn't

Yeah, not a great thing to say but I understood his intent.

Anyone know what percent of Americans earn $200,000 a year and above? Is it 10%?
